Obituary

"I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith." Godfrey Thomas, son of the late David and Tabitha Thomas, was born April 30, 1926 in Roxboro, North Carolina. He departed this life on January 5, 2009 at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. He received his education in the Roxboro Public School System and migrated to Baltimore, Maryland in 1944. He enlisted as a Merchant Seaman in 1945. He became employed by American Airlines in 1950 and was drafted into the United States Armed services where he served two years, part of which was served in the Korean War. He later returned to American Airlines from which he retired after more than thirty years of service. He was also employed by Allied Coroporation until 1989. At an early age, Godfrey joined Lawson Chapel Baptist Church and worshiped there with his family. Godfrey married the former Rosa Lee Watson on December 14, 1963, and from this union one daughter, Wynette, was born. Godfrey was a caring and devoted husband until she preceded him in death in 1991. Godfrey was an avid sports enthusiast with his two favorite teams being the Baltimore Orioles and the Baltimore Ravens. He looked forwared to watching games with Darryl during their visits. He also enjoyed Sunday calls from Justin and Ikey about football games. "Pop-Pop" as he was affestionately known, had a memory and/or stores for people, places and events that will be hard to duplicate. While health permitted, he enjoyed early morning poweer walks with his best friend and devoted cousin Hubert. Godfrey loved to cook and enjoyed his independence. He was truly devoted to his family and friends. Godfrey leaves to cherish his memory; daughters, Wynette Sims and Josenia Kay Scott; sons, Darryl Thomas and Isaac Watson; daugther-in-law, Rachel Thomas; son-in-law, Bernard Sims; sisters, Lucy M. Hamlett, Effie Olivia Ford and Louise Thomas; brothers, Oswald, William, Garland, Edward, Alexander and Andrew Thomas;six sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law; grandchildren, Tracina Alcorn, Darryl Thomas, Jr., Justin Bryant, Jamal Thomas, Corrin, Kennedy and Kayla Sims; eight great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
