Gregory Donald Avent Jr., son of Gregory Sr. and Joan Avent was born August 1, 1971 in Baltimore, Maryland. God sent an angel to gently take him from labor to his reward on Saturday, January 25, 2014. Lil Greg as he was affectionately called, was a graduate of Baltimore City College High school in 1989. He attended Bowie State University where he was a linebacker on the 1989 CIAA championship bulldog football team. Greg was united in Holy Matrimony to Angela Gibson, his college sweetheart on July 20, 1996. This union was blessed with two children. Gregory was introduced to Christ early in life. He attended Sunday school and served as a young acolyte. He later joined Metropolitan United Methodist Church in Severn, Maryland where he continued his Christian journey until his health started to spiral. Greg was employed by Columbia Exxon Service Center as a Service Manager; he later accepted a position with the Maryland State Government as a Surplus Manager, and most recently as Fleet Manager with Maryland State. Greg loved children and it was his passion to train them in sports. His memories of participating in sports, from pee wee football to being a member of the Bowie Bulldogs led him to pursue this passion. He spent many hours volunteering with the AA Gridiron Rebels and Harundale Youth Sports League of Glen Burnie. He was affectionately known as Coach Greg. Greg's other passion was drag racing. He lived and breathed for speed. From an early age he followed his dad to the racetrack participating as a part of the Avent family racing team. Later Greg's racing dream came true when he obtained his own racecar (1968 Dodge Dart). At the racetrack, Greg was known as Mr. Fixit. He considered himself crew chief of all his friends' racecars. You could always hear him say to them, "Didn't I tell you to pay attention!" Greg traveled with his brother participating in countless IHRA/NHRA competitions, where he was a true contender in the sport. Greg enjoyed laughter and being with people. He loved sharing time I with his children and family. He actively participated in whatever sport his children were involved in. Greg was a free spirit who loved life and always had a joke to make you laugh; his laughter was infectious. He had a heart of gold, which he shared with whomever needed joy. Gregory was a devoted husband, a loving father, a caring son and brother. Most of all he was a child of the King. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Angela Gibson Avent; his children, Gregory Donald Avent, III and Brandi Elizabeth Avent; his parents, Gregory Sf. & Joan Avent; his brother, Ricky Avent; grandparents Agnes Harris & Robert Kelly; mother-in-law, Nannette Gibson; father-in-law, Edward Gibson, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
