IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Gwendolyn B.
Turner
December 1, 1938 – March 22, 2019
Gwendolyn Bernice Turner (Gwen) was born on December 1, 1938 in Baltimore,
Maryland to Rosie Turner and Nathaniel Jones. She departed this life on Friday, March 22,
2019. Gwen was raised in South Baltimore and attended neighborhood schools. She
was a part of Baltimore history as one of the first black students to integrate
Southern High School, where she graduated in 1957. She worked proudly for the DMV
in Baltimore and spent many years working for the Social Security
Administration. However, Gwen wanted more out of life.
At age 44, Gwen enrolled in the College of Notre Dame of Maryland. She attended
classes every weekend for the next four years while working a full-time job. In
December 1986, she received her Bachelor of Arts degree and began a career as a social
worker. She helped many young people and families in the 20 years that she dedicated to
her work. One of the great joys of her life was her son Daryl. She was committed to
making sure he stayed out of trouble and performed well in school. Many a night at
dusk you could hear her voice ringing in the street to summon Daryl to come in for the
night. She was very proud of the son she raised as a single mother until her final
breath.
She was a beloved arid delightful grandmother to Erin, Evan, and Emani. Gwen was the
older sister to Patricia Carr with whom she shared a long, loving and happy
relationship. Gwen was also a spirited woman and lived life on her own terms. True to
herself, she passed over on her own terms. She was loved by the many friends she
made over the years and by her large, extended family.
Gwen is survived by her son, Daryl: granddaughters Erin Forbes (Anthony) and Emani
Adams, extended family Sidney Hinton, grandson, Evan Adams, and, Sister Patricia
Carr, niece Kia Carr, grand-nephew Justin Carr, "second son." Robert Ames and
daughters Starr and Chanaya Ames, cousins Shelley, Lisa, Sandra, Brandon, John,
Shaunie (Roger), Dana, (Dennis), Barbara, Kim, Nicole, Yvonne, Bernita (Avon), Denise, Jerry
(Holly), Jackie (Tano) , Jay, Janine (Lyndon), Gladys, Nicky (Ann), Indy (Earl) and many
beloved relatives and friends.
