Helen Charlene Brown

HELEN CHARLENE HART BROWN, RN, affectionately known as “Helen,” departed this life peacefully on June 7, 2026, at the age of 96, surrounded by the love of her family.

 Born on June 4, 1930, in Round Hill, Virginia, Helen lived a life defined by service, compassion, determination, and grace. She dedicated her professional life to nursing, a calling she embraced with excellence and dignity. She graduated from Provident Hospital, one of the few institutions available to aspiring Black nurses and physicians at the time. As a Registered Nurse, Helen served at the University of Maryland Medical Center, where she became the first African American Nursing Supervisor in the Psychiatric Division. Earlier in her career, she practiced psychiatric nursing at the Payne Whitney Psychiatric Clinic in New York. Through decades of service, she touched countless lives with her skill, wisdom, and unwavering compassion.

In 1956, she married the love of her life, Joseph H. Brown Jr. who preceded her in death. Together they built a family rooted in love, faith, perseverance, and mutual respect. 

Helen’s life extended far beyond her profession. She known throughout her community as an avid whose daily walks became legendary among and neighbors. Even into her nineties, remarkably active, often walking Mrouphott town and caring for her beloved dog. Her commitment to health, independence, and vitality inspired everyone who knew her.

 She was also an exceptional cook whose kitchen became a gathering place for family and friends. Her meals were prepared with love and became treasured family traditions. Among her many talents was winemaking, famous dandelion wine, a cherished memory for her children and loved ones.

Helen possessed a quiet strength, elegance, and grace that defined her character. She was known for her kindness, patience, generosity, intelligence, and impeccable sense of style. Whether attending a family gathering, meeting friends, or simply taking one of her daily walks, Helen was always beautifully dressed. Her sharp outfits, coordinated accessories, and natural sophistication became one of her trademarks and reflected the pride and confidence with which she lived her life. She believed deeply in the importance of education, hard work, and caring for others. Through her example, she taught lessons that will continue to guide generations of her family.

 A proud member of the Provident-Helene Fuld Nurses Association, Helen maintained a lifelong connection to the nursing profession and to the institution that helped launch her remarkable career.

 Above all, Helen was devoted to her family. She was a loving mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin, mentor, and friend. Her greatest joy came from the people she loved and the relationships she nurtured throughout her long and meaningful life.

Helen leaves to cherish her memory: her son, Joseph H. Brown III; daughter, Charlene Brown Baldwin; grandchildren, Ellis Montgomery Anagho Brown . and Myla Hart Brown; daughter-in-law, Ada Anagho Brown; son-in-law, Rev. Pastor Jimmy C. Baldwin; brother, Earl Hart; and a host of nieces nephews and other relatives. 

While her family mourns her passing, they celebrate a life extraordinarily well lived—a life marked by service, love, resilience, and grace. Her legacy will continue in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
