IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Helen
Fogg
March 8, 1942 – June 14, 2017
Helen Louise Huntley entered the world on March 8, 1942 at the Leslie Street home shared by her parents, the late Theodore & Florence Huntley. She was the first daughter and third eldest of six children. As a young girl, she attended Baltimore City Public School #104Saint Peter's Claver. Ms. Huntley completed her studies within the Baltimore School system, graduating from school #450, Frederick Douglass High School. Outside of her typical studies, she was a member of the volleyball team.
At Douglass, teenage Helen excelled in her home economics class. It was here that she perfected her craft of wielding a sewing needle. Guided by her fashion savvy and nimble hands, she became a very successful seamstress for name brand companies such a Joseph A. Bank and Resisto, among others. From her immaculate and well decorated home, she ran her own sewing shop for friends and family. Helen could make anything you saw inside of Hutzler's or Hochschild and Kohn's and she could make it better specifically tailored to you. During prom season and summer, hordes of young girls and women lined up for dresses that bore the label: Specially Hand Made by Helen. The Singer sewing machine? Oh, she made it sing and sing it did!!
Helen's talents went far beyond the clothes worn by stylish women. From her southern parents, she inherited a love of the culinary arts. She knew her way around a kitchen, whipping up multi-course meals for holidays and family occasions. What's more, Helen prepared these big and hearty (AND DELICIOUS) dinner buffets by herself with very little effort. No dinner had any less than 10 different items for you to choose from; at least half ofthese items were meats she picked up from the World Famous Lexington Market. Just as she accepted clothes that needed fixing, she also accepted wild game and exotic meats that needed fixing before cooking. In addition, Ms. Helen's accomplishments as a baker finished every meal. There was always a pastry guests couldn't touch because it was meant for someone else. Made from scratch with love, her sweet potato pies were better than yours. (They were. Period.)
Whatever hobby or task she pursued, music always filled Helen's warm and happy home. Her constant cooking companions were a radio, a multitude of 45S and albums and, in more recent times, CDs. Helen's melodious voice filled her kitchen as she set upon her task of cooking or sewing. As a young woman, Helen recorded her own 45 while on a fun filled trip to Coney Island, New York. The whereabouts of this lost album are unknown, but one can be certain it features her unique flair and beautiful singing voice she inherited from her father.
Helen's unique flair wasn't limited to just her voice, she exhibited a very keen sense of style every time she exited her home. From a young age, she developed an appreciation for beauty and fashion. Her expertise was sought by many who were planning an outfit or decorating. Fully coordinated outfits and matching accessories, purses and shoes were the everyday norm. Secretly or with her permission, all family members helped themselves to the wide array of jewelry and other accessories she amassed over the years. Without any formal beauty training, Helen also wielded a comb like a licensed cosmetologist. Curling and dyeing hair came to her naturally; her best work was done when pressing hair. A press from Helen could rival a chemical straightener. Be it a sewing needle, a hair comb or a ladle, when Helen Fogg picked up a tool, no one questioned the top notch quality of what they were about to receive.
Never one to remain idle, she boldly exhibited an unmatched passion and zeal for life. Helen's skilled, gifted hands and one-of-a-kind voice will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure to be in her company. Left to cherish her memories is her only child, son Kenard J. Johnson. She also leaves behind two adoring grandchildren, Kimberly Johnson and Kenard J. Johnson Jr. and two heartbroken younger siblings, Lawrence Huntley and Gwendolyn Sye. Many nieces (including namesake Nicole "Helen" Sye), nephews, cousins, friends and acquaintances will miss her kindness, generosity and outspoken nature. Mary Johnson, Patsy, Clara Mae, Beaver, Miss Ella and Carlos Prettyman all lost a true blue friend and confidante in Helen. Ms. Fogg was predeceased by her loving parents, Theodore and Florence Huntley, her husband, Eddie Fogg, her partner McKinley Johnson, siblings, Robert Huntley, Theodore (Dick) Huntley, James H. Huntley and her sweet granddaughter, Kyliah Johnson.
