Helen
James
April 15, 1933 – October 22, 2019
Helen James, quietly transitioned into eternal peace at home,
surrounded by her family, on October 22, 2019. Helen was tbe first born
of three children to Emma Veney and Franklin Davis on April 15, 1933 in
Charlotte, North Carolina. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in
deatb by her brother, James Davis and daughter, Edith Davis-Stokes.
Helen was reared in a Christian home and accepted her Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ at an early age. Christian values were a great part of her
upbringing. As a young child, she went to live witb her father in
Charleston, Soutb Carolina where she received her education. While in
South Carolina, she met Roosevelt Davis witb whom she had two children,
Herman and Editb Davis. She later moved to New York City to work as a
domestic and met William Brooks with whom she had her third child,
Portia Davis. After setding in Baltimore, she worked for The Coppers
Company for several years until they went out of business. Then she
furtbered her education at Baltimore City Community College to become a
nurse. After receiving her degree in nursing, she was employed at
Augsburg Lutberan Home until she retired. She decided to return to work
after one year to do private duty nursing for several families in the Park
Heights Jewish Community until she retired for tbe second time. She also
worked 10 years at Our Savior Lutberan Church as a day care provider.
Helen was a member of Good Sheppard Baptist Church for several years
under tbe leadership of Pastor Robert Hunt until his deatb. She later
joined New Psalmist Baptist Church under tbe leadership of Bishop Walter
S. Thomas, Sr. where she enjoyed attending tbe Bible Study Class every
\'\1ednesday and Sunday morning worship. She loved God, her Pastor, and
church family. Worshipping God was her joy.
Helen loved her children, grandchildren and great-grands passionately. She
listened with love, gave her opinion, but left the decisions to them. Helen
had such a big heart. She would help anyone she could. She loved hosting
fancy dinner parties for her family and friends. She was an awesome cook
and enjoyed baking sweet potato pies and giving them away to whoever
came to visit her. To date, she only shared her recipe witb one person, her
granddaughter Shani.
She is survived by two children, Herman and Portia Davis; one sister,
Evangelist Ethel Lee; seven grandchildren, Eric Davis, \'\1ayne Hubbard,
Tiomba Robinson, Janelle and Talita Davis, Jeaneen Molock and Shani
Phillips; sixteen great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; one
nephew, Gregory Davis; and two special friends, Judy and Mozetta Parks,
and a host of family and friends.
