Obituary

HENRIElTA GERALDINE BAILEY, the daughter of the late Clara and Edwin Whittington, was born in Annapolis, Maryland on November 6, 1920. She went home to be with Jesus on January 5, 2014. She received her education in the Baltimore City Public School System. While still a youngster, Henrietta accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior while attending Shiloh Christian Community Church in Baltimore, Maryland. She was the pianist and organist for many years and served the church in a number of capacities for more than sixty years. Henrietta was proud to be Douglas's (deceased) and Paul's mom. In 1947, after marrying Robert Bailey, Henrietta became stepmother to Barbara. Later, Henrietta and Robert raised their niece, Denise, from the age of five. Both Henrietta and Robert delighted in being parents and grandparents. They also took care of Henrietta's mother (Mama Clara) until she passed away. Henrietta was employed by the Baltimore City Department of Social Services. In her spare time, she loved entertaining. Everyone looked forward to her Christmas Day open house, which was filled with much food, fun and laughter. After her retirement, Henrietta devoted even more time to the Charmettes, a prominent Baltimore social club. The group sponsored numerous social events such as crab feasts, cruises and, everyone's favorite, the annual square dance called the western round up. The group used most of the proceeds from these affairs to sponsor scholarships for low-income kids. Henrietta and Robert continued their active social life, including traveling with friends Mildred and Leslie Stokes, until their health began to fail. Failing health ultimately led Henrietta and Robert to move to Crownsville, Maryland to live with Paul and Daphne. Paul and Daphne provided superb attention and care, even driving Henrietta into Baltimore for church service, Tuesday Bible study and to get her hair and nails done. Henrietta's beloved Robert went to he with Jesus on May 21, 2010. Paul and Daphne continued providing her excellent care until she was admitted to Anne Arundel Medical and later to Fairfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. They maintained a vigil at Henrietta's bedside until God called her home at 6:30 p.m. on January 5, 2014. Cherishing fond memories of Henrietta until our reunion are: a devoted son, Paul Whittington; a stepdaughter, Barbara Key; two daughters-in-law, Daphne Whittington and Brenda Whittington; three sisters-in-law, Mamie Downey, Ester Whittington and Mary Whittington; a special niece, Denise Dubin; nine grandchildren, Chad Key, Michael Whittington, Frank Whittington, Beverley Ann Whittington, Kenny Whittington, Paul Whittington [r., Paula Whittington, Sean Whittington, Woolford Whittington; and a host of great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
