IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Herbert V.
Baze
August 25, 1936 – January 14, 2018
Herbert Vernon Baze
,
affectionately known to many as "Joe", was born
August 25, 1936 in Ruffin, North Carolina to the late Rufus Baze and Mildred
Baze Perkins. After moving to Baltimore, Maryland, Herbert graduated from
Carver Vocational Technical High School. He was an only child, and at an
early age, he became a member of Providence Baptist Church, and was
baptized over 60 years ago.
In 1957, he was joined in marriage to Shirley E. Sanders and from their union
there were five children whom they raised in a nurturing environment. Today,
only two of their children are still living.
In the early 1960's, one of Herbert's first jobs in the Baltimore region was that
of a Baltimore City Police Officer. Always gainfully employed, Herbert
subsequently held supervisory positions at Carr Lowery Glass Company,
Eastern Roper Company, Linens of the Week and, finally, at Volunteers of
America.
Herbert was a long time resident of the Cherry Hill Community in Baltimore,
MD. There, he shared so much of his life with his devoted wife, Shirley. He
was known for his "gift of gab", for giving advice to others and, especially, for
being a friend to so many. He was very much interested in sports and he was
a true fan of the Baltimore Orioles and the Baltimore Ravens. Herbert also
avidly
watched the news and read the newspaper.
Before he became ill, Herbert was known to be a "lover of food"! He truly
enjoyed consuming good food. The culinary skills of his late mother, Mrs.
Mildred Perkins, his aunts and loving wife, Shirley, kept Herbert Baze a happy
man! In fact, he was known to close his eyes while eating, thus showing that
he truly savored the taste of what he was eating.
'I
Herbert greatly appreciated his family. He absolutely loved being a father, a
grandfather and a great-grandfather. He was affectionately referred to as
"Pop-Pop" by his offspring. He had a 6'4" statue, and to some he was a "giant".
However, those close to him saw him as a "gentle giant" who was kind and
.caring. When his health permitted, he came to worship at Providence, and
enjoyed conversing with the fellow worshippers following the services.
In recent years, Herbert was often' in and out of hospitals or rehabilitation
centers. In these facilities, he received care because of his failing health.
Though in his last few months on God's great earth, Herbert was in a hospital,
he displayed a strong will. He was determined to get well again -
and his
speech, his appetite and his cognitive ability returned!
Yet, two days after this
marvelous occurrence, God took Herbert Vernon Baze Home on January 14,
2018.
Herbert will be remembered with love by his devoted wife, Shirley E. Baze.
To cherish their memories of him and to celebrate his life, Herbert leaves one
son, Michael T. Baze (Betty); one daughter, Veronica Baze Hunter; 7 grand-
children, Patrice N. Baze, Michael T. Baze Jr., Laquisha Dansbury, Ba'Shawn
1. Moore, Ricky Dixon, Crystle Baze, Lynn M. Hunter; two step grandchil-
dren, Tia Deal and Cassandra Carson; six great-grandchildren, Tishoenia,
Tyshawn, Victoria, Ayaden, Ameila and Isaiah; a best friend, his cousin,
Queen Jones, and a host of other family members and friends. Herbert was
preceded in death by three children, Herbert, Angela and Darryl.
