Obituary

HERBERT N. GREENE JR., son of the late Herbert N. Greene Sr. and Mary Greene, was born on May 24, 1943 in Baltimore, Maryland. He departed this life on January 22, 2013 after a brief illness. Herbert was raised in Cherry Hill with a Christian upbringing that led to his accepting Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. Prior to the family moving to Edmondson Village, he graduated with honors from Edmondson High School in 1961. Then, he matriculated at what was then called Morgan State College. In 1965, Herbert graduated from Morgan State College with a B.A. Degree in history. Herbert's participation in the ROTC program at Morgan led to his service in the United States Army as a 1st Lieutenant. He served in Korea from 1965-1967. Upon completion of his service in the United States Army, Herbert was employed as a supervisor at Calvert Distillery and Proctor and Gamble respectively. During this period of time, Herbert traveled extensively to countries such as Spain, France and Mexico. After a number of years in corporate America, Herbert secured a position with the Federal Government. He was employed as a computer specialist at Walter Reed Medical Center. When he retired from that position, he held the highest Federal Civilian grade of GS-0334-12. As an avid sports enthusiast, Herbert especially enjoyed following the Ravens and the Orioles. He was a superior chess player who was seldom beaten by his opponent. As a result of his jovial personality, keen sense of humor, intellect, and his liberal words of encouragement, family and friends enjoyed his company. He never hesitated to give a compliment for one's accomplishments. Herbert leaves to cherish his memory: his devoted mother, Mary R. Greene; one brother, George Greene Sr.; three sisters, Paula Norris, Cascelia Spears and Karen Davenport; one sister-in-law, Eleanor L. Greene; two brothers-in-law, Lionel Spears Sr. and Robert Davenport Sr.; two nieces, Valerie and Nicole; seven nephews, George, Jarrad, Lionel, Elwood, Eliot, Robert and Brandon; and a host of other loving relatives. "Time is not measured by the years that we live, But by the deeds that we do and the joys that we give." -Helen Steiner Rice
