Hortense E. Smith, daughter of Medford and Beatrice Smith was born on January 23, 1937 in Baltimore, Maryland. The youngest of two children, Hortense was a loving sister to her brother, Kenneth W. Smith until his passing in 1981. Hortense graduated from Douglas High School and entered Morgan State College majoring in Sociology. A member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Hortense received a MS Degree in Sociology from Penn State U. As a young, successful professional Hortense served on the staff at Rosewood State Hospital. Years later she worked for the Baltimore City Public Schools as a participant in the Grand Parents Program and a substitute teacher. Hortense played the Piano at the Smith Family's Place of Worship, Herbert Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church and later she affiliated at Waters A.M.. Church. Hortense was highly respected by family and friends who will remember her as a wise, intelligent, witty individual. Hortense leaves to mourn her loss: Beatrice Caldwell(Walter), Ronnie Smith (Carolyn), Medford Smith (Diane), Gwendolyn Hargrave (Gregory), Linda Wilk- erson (Michael), Ernestine Smith, Ernest Smith (Corrine); special great niece, Wanda Brooks; special great nephew, Walter K.
