Obituary

IDA M. CANADA, daughter of the late James and Judie Leigh was born on October 26, 1928 in Halifax, Virginia. She departed this life suddenly on October 31, 2017.

Marie, as she was so affectionately called, received her education in the Halifax County School system. From the age of 13, Marie worked as a laborer to help care for her family. Later, Marie took pride in being a homemaker and caring for her children as well as other family members who were in need.

She attended Central Baptist Church for many years before joining First Mount Calvary Church. She served as a Missionary until she was no longer able to attend regularly. She loved the Lord and enjoyed listening to gospel music.

She married the late Aaron Joseph Canada and from that union seven children were born. Marie was a sweet and loving person. Many looked to her as a "second mother". She never turned away anyone in need and there was never a time that she had an empty nest. Her door was always open as she loved helping others. If you were hungry she gave you food, if you needed a place to stay she gave you a bed.

Marie had a loving yet feisty spirit. She did not play when it came to her family. Marie would do anything to protect not only her own kids but the kids in the Fayette Street Community as well. Some would say she was a fighter. In her spare time she enjoyed putting puzzles together and playing cards.

Marie made numerous friends wherever she went and will be sincerely missed by everyone who knew her. She was always a true friend and devoted family woman.

She leaves to cherish her memories, two sons, Claude Canada Sr. and Larry Canada; two daughters-in-law, Joan Canada and Lola Canada; 16 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, one sister in law, Juanita Leigh and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Her husband Aaron Joseph Canada, 4 sons, 1 daughter and 8 siblings all proceeded her in death. Special recognition to her grandson Demetrius Canada who dedicated himself in caring for her up until her death.
