For many, Wednesday, April 30, 2014, was the beginning of a new day here on Earth, but for Irene Alberta Parker, it was the beginning of her journey home to be with the Lord. Irene, daughter of the late William and Elizabeth Hawkins was born on July 16, 1927 in Baltimore, Maryland. She was the eldest child of fifteen. As a child, Irene would play the piano and tap dance with her well renowned Uncle Lewis "Hawk," whom was also a tap dancer and her father's band on Pennsylvania Avenue. She also danced at Johns Hopkins Hospital to entertain sick children. Irene was born into a very structured religious upbringing. She received her education and sacraments at St. Peter Claver Parrish. She was an active lifelong member at St. Peter Claver. As a young adult, Irene met a wonderful man. They started dating as childhood sweethearts. Wedding bells rang when Irene married the love of her life of 61 years, the late William Phillip Parker Sr., affectionately known as Tinkey. They were an amazing couple and were like "two peas in a pod." They enjoyed each and every moment together as they were inseparable. Tinkey took pride in and always making sure Irene was well taken care of, that she did not want for anything. They had a very long and happy fulfilling marriage. Irene was the first African American homeowner to live on North Avenue/Payson Street corridor. During their joyous union, there were seven born; William Philip Jr., Larry Anthony, Purnell Francis Sr., Eric Delaine, Areen Maria Parker-Collins and Denise Mary. There was one person in particular that Irene was very fond of, Paulette her younger sister whom she raised from a child. Preceding her in passing were five of her children; William, Larry, Purnell, Eric, Areen and her grandson Avon. Irene was a home maker and took great pride in raising her children, especially those Parker Boys! No one could tell her anything about her boys! Irene was the Matriarch of the family. People often sought her advice, and she could hold everyone's secrets. She really enjoyed making her special signature frozen cups for her community. Furthermore, Irene really enjoyed traveling, especially to Atlantic City with her family members. Irene leaves family who will truly miss her, but who are thankfull to GOD for allowing them to be touched by her life and to have such beautiful memories. Viewing Joseph H. Brown Jr. Funeral Home
