Jacqueline Johnson was born in Cleveland, Ohio
February 9, 1925 to Anna Johnson.
She was raised in Baltimore, Maryland and attended public
schools there. She graduated from Douglass High school
June 1941.
She met James Owings in the Douglass High School Choir.
They were I?arried on September 28, 1941. This union would
last for 76 years.
Jacqueline earned her bachelor's degree in Elementary
Education from Coppin State College. She received her
Master's degree in Elementary Education from Morgan State
College in 1973. She taught in Baltimore Public Schools in
elementary education for 30 yrs. She taught gifted and
talented classes toward the end of her career in education.
She taught vacation bible school and "Science is for everyone"
at Metropolitan United Methodist Church. She also organized
the Bell Choir there.
She and James were musically talented and they gave concerts
at various churches around the city. Some of these concerts
were broadcasted on radio. They sang in the Morris Queen
Choral for a number of years and went on to be featured in
a production of "Showboat" with William Bendix. She sang
with the Metropolitan Choir, The Inspirational Choir
with Marco Merrick which became the Community Concert
Choir of Baltimore. She also sang for many years with the
"Sing along Choir" which performed the Messiah with
Rev. Raymond Kelly. In addition to that, she performed with
world renowned musicians such as Ms. Audrey McCullum,
HughCarey and Mack Statham.
Her brothers Carl and Walter preceded her in death. Her
beloved husband who was known by friends and family as
"Mickey" passed away on November, 25, 2017. She survived
breast and colon cancer but continued to have an active life
with her love of music.
She is survived by her five children: Cynthia Thomas (Joseph),
Roxanne Forster (Gregory, Sr.), Irvin Owings (Grace), Juliette
Ruffin, and Wendell Owings (Brenda); grandchildren, Eileen
Shaheed (Tiaunt), Lauren Forster Walls, Gregory Forster, Jr.
(Donna), Jackye Forster Clayton (Todd), Tamir Ruffin, Aisha
Ruffin-Shaw (Aubrey) Irvin James Owings (Cassandre) and
Taylor Owings and a host of great and great-great
grandchildren, family and friends.
