The lyrics of "My Heart Will Go On," from the award winning movie "Titanic, remind us that, despite sudden, devastating events, our hearts and memories will, forever, remain touched by loved ones whom we lose. Much like the families of those lost in Titanic, the family of Jamar Martell "Butchy" Green now have the opportunity to hold him in their hearts forever. And while his sudden departure on April 4th in the very community he lived and loved may seem unexpected, unfair, and way too soon, it serves to remind all that, in this world in which we live, mortality has no age limit. Butchy's journey began on November 26, 1986, in West Baltimore. The son of Leonard Green and Karen Thornton, Butchy was raised not only by his mom, Karen, but also by his large extended family of sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. As a youngster, he enjoyed his pampered times with his Aunt Rose, and welcomed the times he spent with his cousins, Robby, Ra-Ra, Mike and Joey, whom were like his brothers. Growing up, Butchy attended Baltimore City Public Schools. Outside of school, he loved music, especially oldies but goodies, cars, and driving, with or without a driver's license. Like a true Sagittarius, he was happy go lucky, yet could be very intense, putting forth the needed focus to accomplish whatever he challenged himself to do. Those who knew him understood that he favored freedom over commitment, enjoyed immediate gratification and life in the streets, and liked beating the odds. With his tough charm and strong, rugged good looks, Butchy loved the ladies, and, oh, how the ladies loved him back. He had three children, two girls and one boy, and he was especially proud of them. He often journaled about his love for his family and children, . welcoming the opportunity for the large gatherings, cook outs, and reunions characteristic of his family. At the same time, he often commented on his restlessness, his being awake in the early hours of the morning in deep reflection. Without a doubt, like many of our youth today, he was wrestling with a number of challenges. His sudden departure, undoubtedly, will leave a void in the hearts of many, especially his beloved family. For them, as well as all of his remaining loved ones, his legacy, is a simple, but bold, one: enjoy life and live each day to its fullest; have a dream but choose it wisely; and love family and cherished friends. Although a very dear grandmother, Ms. Dorothy "Dot" Thornton, two uncles, Christopher and Robert Thornton, and two favorite cousins, Marcal and Sam, preceded him in death, those remaining to cherish his memories include his mother, Karen Thornton; father Leonard Green, Sr.; stepfather, Joseph Scott; two daughters, Trinity Megginson and Shiyah Green; one son, Jamar, Jr; seven sisters, Bernadette, Regina, Kimberly, Crystal, Olivia, Stacey, and Jessica; six brothers, Eric, Leonard Jr., David, Lenard, Christopher, and Brandon; two nieces, Ja'Taeviah and Makenzie; three nephews, Tyon, Kash, and Kyndal; close cousins with whom he loved to hang, Robby, Ra-Ra, Mike, and Joey; two devoted longtime friends/brothers James "Bugga" Owens and Douglas "Man Man" Brooks; and also many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
