James Edward Herbert, Jr., son of Mary Bernice Anderson and the late James Edward Herbert, Sr., was born on April 12, 1950 in Baltimore, Maryland. James gracefully departed this life on March 1, 2015 after a recent illness. James received his education in the Baltimore City Public School System. He graduated from Dunbar High School in 1968. James then served in the Untied States Air Force in Lackland, Texas where he was medically discharged. After his discharge, James embarked on a career as a Claims Associate Supervisor for the state of Maryland, which lasted 20 years. In 1972, James married Kassandra Smith. From their union, James had a son, Eric D. Herbert, Sr., and a stepdaughter, Stacey Smith. James and Kassandra would later divorce, and James chose to stand alone until his departure. James affectionately loved his mother, son, and grandchildren, and was an avid sports fanatic. For most of his adult life, James played softball for the Poets Club. His team won numerous league champion- ships and had much success in softball tournaments along the east coast. James leaves to cherish his memory: his mother, Mary; son, Eric Sr.; grandchildren, Eric Jr. and Stephanie; sisters, Danita, Michelle, and Marcia; uncles, Landen, David, and Pepper; aunts, Ada, Sylvia and Joyce; a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins; close friend, Ben Bailey and many other friends and loved ones.
