Obituary

James Walter McRaeSr., son of the late Joshua Roosevelt McRae and Ethel Bell McRae was born on January 14, 1936 in Red Springs, NC. "Sonny" as he was affectionately called by family and friends, was the youngest of three children. In the early morning hour on August 29, 2015, God dispatched one of His angels to assist him with his journey home. Sonny was educated in the public school systems of Red Springs, NC and Baltimore City, MD. He was employed throughout his life as a professional trucker and was an active retired member of "Truck Drivers and Helpers" Local Union No. 355 (Teamsters). He loved commanding the big rigs and hauled everything from steel to lumber up and down the east coast. "Trucking was his thing". Sonny was a loveable guy and full of life. He had numerous family and friends where ever he went and loved visiting his relatives in Red Springs, NC and throughout the South. As the baby boy, he had a special bond with his older sisters and their children. Everybody was crazy about "Uncle Sonny". Flanked by his number one partner and chosen brother (Sonny Allen), their friendship remained strong until the end. For many years if you saw Sonny McRae, you saw Sonny Allen. They were like the "Dynamic Duo". He was preceded in death by his wife; Levenia McRae; son, Darren Robinson; parents, Joshua and Ethel; and sister, Doris Lightsey. Sonny leaves to cherish his memory: five children; James W. McRae, Jr. (Linda); Catonne L. Parker (Cornell); Simone Gibson; Ethel McRae; and Ebony Johnson; one sister, Lelia Delane (Eddie); twelve grandchildren, Christopher, James III, Cornell, Andre, Quinteta, Derrick, Donte, Da'shauna, Marquis, Orcenio, O'Siah, and O'Zarien; twelve great-grandchildren; Christopher, Nrjae, Nevaeh, [amarie, Nishel, Ashira, James N, Imani, Sanai, Andre, [ibreal, and Janiyah; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends Memorial Service Joseph H.
