James Mears
affectionately known as "Mickey" was a devoted father,
grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.
James was born on June
3, 1935
in Baltimore
, Maryland. He was the son
of the late James Lanliford Reynolds and the late Clora Sandra Mears. He
lived a triumphant life and departed on July 9,2018 after a short illness.
He was educated in the Baltimore City Public School System. At the age of
18, he entered the United States Army. Returning from the military, he
married the love of his life Clara Marie Brown. From that union three
children were born, Clara "Angel", Judith "Judy", James Jr. "Donnie".
James was employed with A&P Bakery for over
20
years. Born to be an
entrepreneur, he established a laundromat, dry cleaners, record shop,
variety store and a candy truckfor his children. His longtime
faithful friend
and business partner Mr. Bernie Myers. In
1992,
James founded Indepen-
dent Taxi Association, the first taxi company licensed, owned
, and operat-
ed by a minority in the City of Baltimore. In 2006, James sold Independent
Taxi Company to Dave Howard his longtime friend in the cab business.
He was the president of Winchester/Rosemont Improvement Association
for over
30
years. He was the Vice President and Chairman of Crime &
Safet
y for the ARCa Association. He has been a strong voice against
loitering and drug trafficking at the neighborhood stores. James was
selected as one of the 2011 Baltimore's Top Neighborhood Dads Contest.
James was a jazz enthusiast and lifetime member of Left Bank Jazz Society.
He lived to cultivate minds toward entrepreneurship. James loved dogs
and would feed the birds daily. He loved sports and dancing.
James leaves to cherish his memory: three children, Clara M Freeman,
Judith Mears and James Mears Jr.; three granddaugthers, Jennifer
Henderson, Porsha Hartwell (Kamani) Kapria Mears; three grandsons,
Anthony Freeman Jr. (Arey), Antione Freeman (Bianca) and Earl Rich;
one sister, Lorraine Neves; one brother, Lanliford Reynolds; cousins, E.
Louise Dorsey, Catherine Potillo; seven great grandchildren, lifelong
special friend, Mrs. Doris Pollard and Brenda Jones his life coach.
