Obituary

James Linwood Newby , son of the late Hosea J. and Mildred Newby, was born on February 26, 1927, in Baltimore, Mary- land. He departed this life on April 24, 2017.

James, affectionately known by his friends and family as "Newby" attended Elementary School #117 in Baltimore, MD. After the death of his mother at age 7, he completed his education in the Virginia School System. James enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of 17 and served with them for 19 months. He then enlisted in the United States Marine Corp and served proudly until his retirement as a Gunnery Sergeant on January 1, 1967. After his retirement from the United States Marine Corp, he was employed as a chef for various companies that included Emerson Hotel, Chevrolet and the Social Security Administration.

James married Rosa Lee Irby on December 17, 1949 and out of this union four children were born, Hosea, Kenneth, Eric and Rita.

James loved to cook and take care of his family. He was a mentor to the young men at Elementary School #164 in Cherry Hill for many years. He often shared his culinary skills by cooking meals for St. Veronica's Church, where he was a member, and for retreats in the Catskills.

He was very active with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He would accompany them on all their field trips for school and often times he spoiled them with almost anything they would ask for. He was well known in the community by most young people as "Pop Pop" as he treated everyone with love and kindness. James was a very strong man and protector for his family. The legacy he leaves behind is one of family, humility, strength and Love.

James leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted wife of 68 years, Rosa Lee Newby, four children; Hosea J.
