Obituary

James Jonathon Speed, son of the late John E. Speed Jr. and Jean Fortune Lewis, was born on July 8, 1950 in Baltimore, Maryland. He departed this life on November 22, 2016 at Good Samaritan Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland.

He received his education in the Baltimore City Public School System and Morgan State University. He served in the U.S. Army with tours in Vietnam, Germany and stateside when he was discharged in 1971.

James was united in marriage with the former Roslyn Dorsey on November 9,1979.

James, also called Speedy, Speed-Ball, Uncle Mister and his favorite name, Grampy, was well loved and respected by his family and friends. He had a giving and loving spirit.

Before becoming disabled, James was employed by the Baltimore City Public School System where he operated a school bus for special needs children. He was a movie fanatic and maintained hundreds of DVDs, both current and classic.

He was a member of St. Luke A.M.E. Church in Ellicott City, MD where over the years he served as a Trustee, an Usher and an Associated Missionary. He had a great love for St. Luke and took on many projects. His greatest pleasure was being involved with the development of the new entry steps.

Left celebrating his life are his wife Roslyn; son, Michael; grandson, Neko; great grandsons, Kameron and Kemare; sister, Joyce Greene, (his brother Kenneth Leach preceded him in death) sisters-in-law, Christine Thompson, Marjorie Dorsey, Edna Dorsey and Gloria Leach and "adopted" grandchildren, Nyah and Devin Moore; a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, cousins and friends.
