IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Janet
West
August 18, 1953 – March 14, 2021
Janet Elizabeth West, daughter of the late James M. West and Shirley Coleman, was
born on August 18, 1953 in Baltimore, Maryland. The Lord called Janet home to her
eternal resting place on Sunday, March 14, 2021.
Janet received her formal education through the Baltimore City Public School System.
At an early age, and inspired by the nurturing and guidance of her late grandmother,
Mary R. West, she accepted Jesus Christ as her Personal Savior and became a
member of St. Pius V Roman Catholic Church.
Janet was employed and retired from the Baltimore City Department of Social Services
after 35 years of devoted service. She was motivated to labor in the field of human
services. She strived daily to serve others and to leave a positive influence on them.
She appreciated working in a team-oriented environment with colleagues whom she
considered her extended family.
Janet loved and cherished her family. Cooking was one of her many talents. It was,
absolutely, a gift to cook for her family. All of Janet meals, were prepared with
unconditional love for her family. Coming together, as a family unit, was a gracious
tradition Janet performed with honor. Spending quality time with her family, and friends,
was extremely important to her.
Janet was fond of dancing, especially hand dancing, singing, listening to Oldies-but-
Goodies, music. Watching Old Classic movies and traveling around the world was two
of her favorites.
Janet was a humble, a generous, and a kindhearted soul. She was passionate about
helping anyone in a crisis and often opened her home to those in need of food, shelter
and care. She was well admired and respected by everyone who knew her and
everyone she met.
Janet leaves to cherish her memory: devoted children, Edward L. Hawkins, Jr.,
Tawanda J. Fleming, William M. Hawkins and Michael D. Hawkins; one son-in-law,
Tyrone Fleming; two daughters-in-law, Tammy Hawkins and Tayvon Hawkins;
grandchildren, Takera Hawkins, Taronda Hawkins, Edward Hawkins III (Kisha),
Shertawnda Stepney, Tiera Stepney, Terrell Fleming, Darriel Hawkins and Nia Hawkins;
great-grandchildren, Ahmad Good, Amirah Good, Ayanna Moore, Ayden Moore, Payton
Stephenson, Darrell Hawkins, De'ja Hawkins, Genesis Walker, Jade Wilson and Toney
Brown, Jr.; two special friends, Gail Jackson and Vanessa Warren; and a host of other
relatives and friends.
