Obituary for

Janice Evelyn Martin Chambers

Janice Evelyn Martin Chambers, slipped away peacefully at her home on April 12, 2023 after a
brief illness. Janice was a Baltimore, Maryland native and the oldest of 2 daughters from the
marital union of the late John Henry Martin and the late Isabelle Cameron Martin Williams.
Their memory lived on through Janice's intelligence, independence and determination. Being
the oldest grandchild, Janice was a born leader.

As tiny girls and as teenagers, during the spring and summer months, Janice and her little sister
Kathy traveled together to visit relatives. In the springtime, they would visit their aunt Evelyn in
Cincinnati, Ohio. In the summer months, they hopped on a train and spent the best time of their
lives in Erwin, North Carolina with grandparents George and Catherine Cameron, uncles, aunts
and many cousins. Attending the family's annual 4th of July reunion weekend celebration was
the highlight of their summer vacation. Janice and Kathy were always together.

Janice graduated from Edmondson High School in Baltimore City. She obtained a Bachelor of
Science degree in Special Education in 1973. Upon taking the Graduate Record Exam (GRE),
Janice received an invitation from the prestigious Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts to attend school there. She earned her Masters of Education degree in Special Education from Coppin State College (1977) now Coppin State University, Baltimore, Maryland.

For many years, Janice was an active and dedicated member of First Mount Calvary Baptist
Church. She sang on choirs, worked on several committees and was involved in a number of
church activities. She enjoyed her church family.

Janice met her husband Michael Emerson Chambers while in college. The couple got married in
1989 at First Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Baltimore, Maryland. They celebrated their 34th
wedding anniversary on April 8, 2023.
In the year 1992, Janice and Michael moved to the US Virgin Islands where she accepted a position as a Special Education Teacher at the Peace Corps School. They lived and worked there
for more than 7 years.

Then, in 1997, Janice and Michael followed their dream and traveled to West Africa to study and
learn the traditions of the Ashanti nation of Ghana. They lived and worked there for 2 years.
Janice was an exceptional educator who, along with her husband, appeared on a nationally
televised program entitled Teen Beat. She also appeared on many committees with IFESH (International Foundation for Education and Self Help), Dr. Leon Sullivan's program, to further the
educational opportunities on the continent of Africa. Janice was the force behind a program for
computer literacy using both Apple and PC formats to develop a "Teaching Materials Resource
2 Janice Evelyn Martin Chambers
Center" at the teacher training colleges in Ghana. She produced 2 videos entitled "Images of
Accra and "The Homecoming." Janice was also installed as a Queen-Mother of development in
Ashanti in 1998.

Janice continued to educate others wherever she went. Upon returning to the US Virgin Islands,
in 1999, she was promoted to Secondary Supervisor of Special Education. Janice was a true
workaholic as well as an entrepreneur. She established "Rainbow Juice" and "Your Personal
Teacher" businesses. These businesses were cutting edge at the time they were in operation.
Janice was also gainfully employed by the Hannah More Center, Baltimore City Public Schools,
Baltimore County Public Schools and Self Directed Placement as an employment counselor.
She was also a licensed insurance agent.
In addition, Janice authored a handbook entitled "Improving The Quality of Education for Students with Learning Disabilities" on the islands of St.Thomas and St. John in the Virgin Islands.

Janice had a passion for the simple things in life. As a vegetarian, she appreciated good food
accompanied by her favorite glass of wine. She enjoyed dancing (any time and anywhere), and
found joy in listening to her favorite recording artists; the Isley Brothers, Earth Wind and Fire
and Maxwell. Janice also enjoyed relaxing at home, traveling and an occasional outing to a local casino.
One could describe Janice as "Afro Centric". She fully embraced her African heritage and culture and delighted in wearing ethnic clothing and jewelry.

Janice leaves to cherish her memory: Her adoring husband Michael, devoted daughter Lisa
Deveri Martin, loving sister, Kathy Martin Hall, two grandchildren, Devin Anderson and Devonna
Anderson; three great grand children, Deniya Anderson, Jerrod Anderson and Snoh Wachuku;
Uncles and aunts; Jessie (Cornelia) Cameron, Baltimore, MD, George (Rubye) Cameron, Baltimore, MD, Ernest Cameron, Baltimore, MD, Evelyn Waldon McKinney, Cincinnati, Ohio, Geraldine Cameron, Dunn North Carolina and a host of very dear cousins and close friends.
