Obituary

Mrs. Janie Thomas was born on Novembr 3, 1916 in Sandy Grove, Clarendon cunty, south Carolina. She was the fifteenth child of a family of sixteen children born to the late Jacob and Mary Magdalene McFadden. She departed this life on October31, 2006 after a lengthy illness. The family moved to Kingstree, South Carolina, where Janie attended Tomilson High School and the family attended Bethel A.M.E. Church. Janie worked in several towns in South Crolina in the domestic service prior to moving to Baltimore, Maryland in June 1943. She secured several labor jobs prior to becoming employed with the Joseph E. Lewis & Company as a custodian and worked there until the company went out of business in 1956. Subsequently, she worked as a domestic for several Jewish families within the Baltimore Metropolitan area until she became ill in 2003. Janie graduated from Carver Vocational High School Evening Classes and received certificates of completion of the Home Nursing and Sewing Programs. She joined Davis Memorial A.M.E. Church and the I.C.U.A. an ushers organization in 1943. She was a member of the Baltimore City and the National Organization of I.C.U.A. She served as President and Charirman of the Nurses and Usher's Board of Baltimore City, Chair and Vice Chair of the Baltimore City I.C.U.A. Ways and Means Committee, a member of the Sick Committee, the Usher's Chorus, the H.W. Bridges Health Unit, the Henry Sorrell Nurses and Health Unit, the Missionaries, the Trustee Board, and a Communion Stewardess. She assisted her dear friend, Margie Wilkins, with the ministry to seniors every Thursday until their health began to fail. Janie and robert Edward Thomas were married on August 11, 1956 in Baltimore City. He preceded her in death on September 16, 1994. She leaves to cherish her memory: one son, Raymond McFadden of Baltimore; one sister, Everlena Miller of Kingstree, South Carolina; five grand children, Michael McFadden, Sr. of Baltimore, Raymond McFadden, Jr., Nathaniel McFadden, Brenda Joyce Smith, Rozina McFadden all of Philadelphia; Twelve great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren, two devoted nieces, Carrie Lee Jones and Angie L. McClain-Lynch, both of Baltimore, a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
