IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jarrett Darnell
Miles
December 14, 1973 – December 28, 2023
Jarrett Darnell Miles was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on December 14, 1973. He was a devoted husband, committed father, loving son, and a prolific trombonist. Apart from being a talented musician, he was a multimedia producer, educator, entertainer, businessman, die-hard Baltimore Ravens fan, Morgan State University alumnus, and an unapologetic Christian. Miles passed away a few weeks after his 50th birthday on December 28, 2023, leaving behind cherished memories that will remain with his loved ones forever.
Miles completed his secondary school education at Frederick Douglass High School in 1992. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Music from Morgan State University in 1998, where he served as the section leader of the "Legion of Bones", well-known for being the toughest trombone section in the famous Magnificent Marching Machine, Morgan State University Band. He was also an initiated member of Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity and the Prince Hall Freemasonry, Noble of the Mystic Shrine.
Miles performed under the band named "Mainstream" and created beautiful music. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, the band supported many talented recording artists in the American music industry. They toured the country and played at various prestigious venues such as the House of Blues, The Chicago Theatre, Billy Kings, Sounds of Brazil (aka S.O.B's), Showtime at the Apollo, Sirius XM Radio, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Theatre, the Electric Factory, Walt Disneyland, The Cubby Bear in Chicago, Illinois, and The Five Spot (Black Lily open Mic Series for Women) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Miles played trombone during live performances for several well-known artists, including Kindred the Family Soul, The Roots, Floetry, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Jay Z, Stevie Wonder, Ron Isley, Wynton Marsalis, Toni Braxton, Scott Storch, Jaguar Wright, Dawn Robinson (formerly of En Vogue), Raheem Devaughn, Jazz of Druid Hill, Kem, Maysa Leak, and Darin Atwater. Additionally, his horn arrangements are featured in Morgan State University's "We are the Bears" and on many popular albums such as Jah Works' "Rewind" (Riddim House Productions 2009), Raheem Devaughn's song, "The Love Experience," on his "Catch 22" album, (Jive, Zoomba Label Group, 1228 Recordings 2005), Kindred the Family Soul's "In this Life Together" (Epic, Hidden Beach Records 2003), and Scratch's song, "The Embodiment of Instrumentation," on his "Breath of Fresh Air" album, (Ropeadope Records 2002).
The on-stage and in-studio recordings inspired the creation of "Melodic Confessions: A Contemporary Funk, R&B, Hip-Hop, and Soul series". This music series featured independent artists, live performances, and celebrity guest interviews with a focus on Philadelphia, Baltimore, and New York talent. The music series started as Thursday night performances in local Baltimore City clubs and was later transformed into a video show that has been broadcasting for the past nine years on Philadelphia Community Access Media operating as Philadelphia Public Access Television (PhillyCAM TV). In 2018, Miles' production of "Melodic Confessions" was recognized with a "Cammy Award" for Technical Quality.
Miles also worked on several films, TV shows and web series, they include: "Dark Gold: The Documentary", "Invincible A-List with Vince & Joan", and "Six is It". Additionally, he developed promotional videos, websites, and advertising materials for various Baltimore City electoral campaigns, local churches, small businesses, and the Morgan State University Bands. Miles was deeply committed, hardworking, and highly skilled, and he was also an educator who served at various Christian academies and public schools in the community.
In the early 2000s, Miles had a little chat with Gladys in the basement of Celebration Church City of Champions, formerly called Long Reach Church of God, in Columbia, Maryland. This conversation quickly evolved into a life-long marriage, beautiful family, and a wonderful life. He is survived by his soulmate Gladys of nearly twenty-three years, three children who are his pride and joy - Jaz'mine, Kaila-Elle (Elle), and Johnathan, his biological parents Dr. Melvin N. Miles Jr. and Rosalee Dorsey, bonus parents Charles Dorsey and Cathleen (Cathy) Miles, two sisters - Nichele R. (Nicky) Bowman and Erin Miles Cloud, two brothers - Melvin N. Miles III and Jermaine D. Miles, a host of uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, as well as other family members and friends
