June 6, 1946 – January 29, 2018
Mzee Jean-Claude Hatege. He was born in 06/06/1946 in
Guhundwe-Cyangugu, Rwanda. Died at Future Care Cold
Spring in Baltimore, MD on Monday, January 29th. At early
stage of his life, he moved to Lubumbashi, DRC probably as
a refugee. He worked for multinational company operating
in DRC, Burundi, Tanzania and Kenya. Later on, he started
his own business. For those who knew him then, he was very
successful business man. According to himself and other
people who have known him, he got married to a
gentlewoman from Katanga and had twin daughters. During
the war in Congo, he was separated from his family and sent
to jail. Then was resettled to Baltimore, USA in 2001. By
then he was already mentally affected by the time and
tortured that he was subjected to in the jail. He started
exhibiting some signs of mental issues, this was revealed by
different checkup that were done at Highland Clinic. During
his time, he took up different jobs, he worked very hard and
sometimes could work 108 hrs. per week at BWI. He has his
own apartment in Essex, Maryland, he offered housing to
many African people at that time. His health issues started
catching up with him in 2008. He lost his job and everything
that he had and he became a homeless. In July 2009 he
started living with one of community member who offered
him a free place to live in. He health deteriorated 7 months
ago and he was moved to a senior home care called future
Care in Baltimore Maryland until last week when he passed
away. After he arrived in USA, he started looking for his
family in Lubumbashi and with the help of Papa Akilimali,
they reached out to many prominent people in Lubumbashi
DRC unfortunately they could not locate the Family. They
contacted BBC Africa and Radio DeutshcheWelle but they
were unsuccessful. May his soul rest in peace .
