son of the late William and
Susie Martin, was born on January 9, 1937 in Weldon,
NC. He ascended to glory on July 31, 2018.
He received his education in the Baltimore City Public
School System. He graduated from Carver Vocational
Technical High School in June 1959, with a certification
in Electrical Wiring and Repair. Soon after graduating
high school, Jesse joined the United States Army
where he served four years and received an honorable
discharge. After the service he attended and graduated
from the Peabody Conservatory with a degree in music.
J esse always loved entertaining, first as a ventriloquist
and later as a musician. His first instrument was a flute
and later the saxophone. He played in several local
groups all over the Baltimore area and the music circuit.
on Pennsylvania Avenue. Jesse was one of the original
founders of the Drum Circle of Druid Hill Park, which
is still active 40 years later.
Jesse worked at Seagram & Son (Calvert Distillery)
from 1965 to 1994, in the bottling department. After
his retirement he worked for McLaughlin Electrical. He
mostly enjoyed teaching people how to play music.
Jesse is survived by his wife and childhood sweetheart of
60 years Naomi Martin; daughters, Fern and [oi Martin;
sons, Kip and Kevin Martin; five grandchildren and
two great-grandchildren; sisters, Alma Briley & Susie
McNair. He was preceded in death by son Leaf Martin.
He also leaves to mourn a host of nieces, nephews,
other relatives and friends.
