JessieJames McNair was bornNovember 3, 1945to the late Rosa Lee Allen and the late Robert Moody in Greensville County, VA. Hetransitioned peacefully into eternal rest onFriday July 16, 2021, at Gilchrist Hospice Care in Towson, MD.
Jessiereceived his formal education in theVirginia public school system. Hereceived his GED from theUniversity of Hawaiiand alsoattendedthe Baltimore Business School. He was a Vietnam Veteran, serving in theU.S. Armyuntilhe was honorably dischargedin (insert year).
Upon accepting Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, Jessie was baptized in 1977 at The New Saint John Baptist Church and later years joined the New Shiloh Baptist Church in MD.
Jesse's dedication to helping othersafforded himnumerous job opportunitiesand a lifelong careerin public service.He wasemployed at the Continental Can Company in Hopewell, VA. While there he was responsible (through EEOC) for integrating the employees work areas and putting an end to the posting of "KluKlux Klan" literature on the company's bulletin board.
Jesseheld several other positionssuch asPolice Officer in Petersburg, VA.,and as(insert position)forThe U.S.Postal Service. He also served as(insert position)atThe Department of Juvenile Services, Baltimore, MDuntil his retirement in(insert year).During his tenure at The Department ofJuvenile Services, Jessewas elected President of AFSCME, Local 3167 for 18 years. He also served as an Executive Board Member of AFSCME, Council #92 having many duties of which Chairman of the Credit Union Committee was one. He was often seen on local tv espousing conditions at one of the Juvenilefacilities orfound testifying before one of the Legislative Committees in Annapolis, trying to improve conditions for his members. "Everyone knew Jessie, they just didn't know fromwhere."
Jessedevoted most of his free time loving and caring for his family.He loved to cook and listen to his jazz collection.He was adevoted father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle and friend to many.
Preceded in death is one brother Arthur Lee Allen, three sisters, Cleopatra Moody-Daniel, Charlotte (Stella Mae) Moody-Powell and Sandra Moody-Hayes, and former spousePatricia McNair.
He leaves to cherish his memorya loving daughter, Jewel N. Lewis of Chesterfield, VA;three sons Derrick McNair (Kesha) of Baltimore, MD, Keith Smith and Kermit Smith of Petersburg, VA;four brothers Zollie Allen Jr. of Williamstown, NJ, Robert Moody Jr. of Harlem NY, Ronald Ledbetter of Petersburg, VA and Carlton Ledbetter (Eleanor)of Petersburg, VA;brother-in-law Delbert Powell, six sisters, Via Branch (James) of Chesterfield, VA, Shirley Gordon of West Petersburg, VA, Gail Ledbetter of Petersburg, VA, Mary Harris (William) of Emporia, VA, Joyce Gatlin of Brooklyn, NY, Mildred (Marie) Moody (Jerry) of Emporia, VA;Specialcousins Martha May Hudson and Alphonso Hudson;Ninegrandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren; anda host of Aunts, Uncles relatives and friends. They all will miss him dearly.
