Joan Clements Griffin was born to the late Willie West Clements and Annie Phipps Clements on January 15, 1940 in Greenville, Virginia. She departed this life on Saturday, December 21, 2013 after a brief illness. Joan was christened in 1948 at the Cherry Hill Presbyterian Church. She was a student of the Cherry Hill Public Schools, (PS 159,160,180) and a 1958 graduate of Carver Vocational Technical High School. Joan also attended Morgan State University. On August 3, 1960 she married the late Carroll (Buzz) Griffin Jr. of that union there were two children, Carroll (Mark) Griffin, III and the late Toya Rene Griffin. In 1962 Joan started the Federal Government Career with the Internal Revenue Service, The United State Navy and finally retiring in 1995 from the National Institute on Aging, Gerontology Research Center with 32 years combined service. Joan loved to attend Flea Markets, Yard Sales, and Thrift Stores. When you visited her home she would show off the many objects she had purchased with great pride and joy. After retiring she became interested in plants and particularly with the half dead ones that required a lot of love and attention. She would sincerely say, "I am no-one' s house wife!" give her in lieu of a mop and a broom, a saw and a hammer or some fabric and a sewing machine. Joan was an avid reader of "who done it" adventure and period novels, of which she had a very large collection. She also enjoyed waking all over Cherry Hill. She leaves to mourn her, a son, Carroll Griffin III; father-in-law, Carroll Griffin Sr.; two step-sisters, Mildred Randall of Jacksonville, North Carolina and Crisaundra King of Baltimore, Maryland; aunts, Queen Reed (Robert), Christine White, Katherine Chestnut and Matilda Clements of Richmond, Virginia, Elizabeth Mitchell, and Gladys Clements of Amelia, Virginia; uncles, Alaska Clements of Washington, DC, Charlie Clements of Alexandria, Virginia, Junius Tyler of White Plains, NY and William Squires of Richmond, Virginia; devoted cousins, Roger Jones of Richmond, VA and Angela Reed of Baltimore, MD; lifetime friends, Priscilla Brown, Lyberian Massey of Baltimore, MD and a host of other relatives and friends.
