John A. Yates, Sr. Daddy/Pop - Pop son of the late Robert H. Yates, Sr. and Lucy Scott-Yates was born on July 11, 1923 in Wayne, Pennsylvania. He departed this life on Friday, July 15, 2011 after a lengthy illness. He began his education in Gloucester, Pennsylvania completing his education earning a high school diploma at Frederick Douglas High School of Baltimore, Maryland. After completion of his education he then served in te United States Army being honorably discharged after four years in service 1948-1952. John married Mary E. Yates on June 12, 1954 and celebrated fifty seven years of marriage this year 2011. He was employed as a hard working and dedicated truck driver. John retired from Davidson Trucking Company after thirty years. Although never belonging to any church, John believed and loved the "Lord." John's hobbies were talking on the CB radio "buggy Whip," radio handle, reading the newspaper, listening to the local Channel 13 News, watching Football Washington, D.C. Redskins and Baseball New York Yankees fan on TV, smoking his cigarettes and pipes on the front porch, enjoying a bag of ginger snaps, and of couse his favorite, "Fishing," while enjoying fresh chicken from Popeye's or Kentucky Fried Chicken. John throughout the years made numerous friends wherever he went and will be sincerely missed by everyone who knew him. John was so dedicated to his friends he kept the same barber for over twenty-plus years. If that's not true friendship then what is? He leaves to mourn; his wife, Mary E. Yates; three siblings- one living sister, Catherine Crosby and two other siblings that have preceded him in death, Robert H. Yates, Jr. and Dorothy E. Yates; four children, Sheila Crudup John, Richard A. Yates who has also preceded him in death, John A. Yate, Jr. Donna and Rhonda Upshur Brian; six grandchildren, Danita, Adell, Nakeysha Brian, Brandon, Tyneshya and Troy, three great-grandchildren, Justin, Jaylan and Jaya; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
