son of the late Isaiah and Emma Smith, born August 31,
1941 in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. He departed his earthly life August
30, 2017 after a lengthy illness.
Johnnie began his education in the North Carolina Public School System. In
1949 the family relocated to Guilford, Maryland where he attended Guilford
Elementary School. In 1952 his parents made their permanent resident in Balti-
more City where Johnnie completed his education in the Baltimore City School
System.
In addition to his parents, Johnnie was preceded in death by two daughters,
Deborah D. Smith and Angela M. Smith.
Johnnie worked with his father at various construction sites throughout the State
of Maryland where he learned the art of construction worker. In 1960 he was
drafted into the United States Army. He served in the Army for three years and
received an honorable discharge. Later in 1964, he gained employment with the
Mass Transit Administration (MTA) as a bus operator where he was employed
for 25 or more years. After leaving MT A he became self-employed.
Johnnie had four children, three daughters and one son. A daughter, Deborah
Diane Smith born in 1959 passed away at age three months.
Johnnie married Wyetta Swepson. From that union, Angela Michelle Smith and
Tracy Smith were born. Their marriage ended in divorce. From another relation-
ship, his son, Danyel Edmey was born.
Johnnie's charming and witty personality made him numerous friends wherever
he went. However, many ladies were quickly drawn and attracted to his good
looks, engaging smile, and sweet compliments. Johnny loved spending Christ-
mas Day with his family and friends. He loved traveling to family reunions and
cookouts in Concord, North Carolina with his sisters and special friend and her
daughters. He loved to skate, dance and sing which he performed very well. One
of his hobbies was fixing cars. Johnnie will be sincerely missed by his family and
those who really cared for him.
Johnnie leaves to cherish memories of his life: daughter, Tracy Smith Tucker
(Robert); son, Danyel Edmey; sisters, Roslyn Smith, Kathern Young, Connie
Smith, Bette Simmons, Pamela Smith; one brother, Eugene Smith; nine grand-
children, Shannon Carroll, Justine Smith, Robert Tucker, Davshanna Dupree,
Damani and Dakeri Edmey, Dynver Edmey, Josiah Edmey and a host of nieces,
nephews, other relatives and friends, especially Margaretta Jean, Chanetta Levi
and Quashanna Levi who he was truly devoted to.
