Obituary

Joseph Butler, Jr. son of the late Dorothy and Joseph Butler, Sr., was born on October 8, 1926 in Washington, D.C. He Departed this life on July 3, 2012 after a lengthy illness. Joseph Butler, Jr. received his education in Washington, D.C. public schools. After high school, he went into the United State Army and after his honorable discharge from military service; he enrolled into Howard University where he was an above average student. Upon his graduation, Joseph relocated to the Baltimore area, where he met and married Shirley Mae Jones, to which this union came five children. Joseph was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley as well as his daughter, Roxanne Butler and a son, Louis Colvin. Joe applied for work at Bethlehem Steel in Sparrows Point in the early 1950's, where he was told there was no work for him with his caliber of education. And was told maybe be needed to apply at the Board of Education for a teaching position or for the United States Post Office. That was not where his heart was. Being turned down for the job, he was relentless to keep at it and started at Bethlehem Steel working hard, dirty and tedious jobs in the trenches. Joe always said, "they tried to deter me, but to deter Joe, they could not." Joe continued on at Bethlehem Steel for almost fifty years. Joe joined the Steel Workers Union of the United States of America and became one of their most favorable shop Stewarts. the men always brought their problems to Joe, because they could depend on him for advice and defending them for keeping their jobs. Joseph butler became the president of the Steel Workers Union in 1988 until his retirement in 1997. Joe was a well loving and a respected man in his church, St. Matthews United Methodist Church. Joe loved the Lord and his family. Joe was always a positive influence and involved in his community Day Village Housing for over fifty-five years. Joseph Butler was also preceded in death by two sisters, Jerusha Wilson and Dorothy Gadson. He leaves to mourn; three sons, Paul butler, Craig Colvin and Derrick Colvin; four nieces, five nephews; three brothers, six sisters and a host of other relatives and friends.
