Obituary

Joseph B. Kelly quietly passed away on Sunday, June 5, 2011 at 12:32 a.m. Joseph B. Kelly was born on March 15, 1930 in Baltimore City. He was the son of the late Levi and Isabelle Kelly from Whitestone, Virginia. Affectionately called "Kelly," he attended Catholic Grade School and he graduated from Carver Vocational High School in Baltimore, Maryland. After leaving school, he went to work for Dr. Isaac Young as a Dental Assistant until he was drafted in the United States Army where he served in the Korean War from 1950-1953. A year before he left, he married Minyon Henson in 1951. Through this union they had one son, Harold J. Kelly. Mr. Kelly also has one daughter, Robin Johnson. After his discharge from the military, "Kelly" went to work at University Hospital School of Medicine in Baltimore for the renowned Neurosurgeon and Specialist, Dr. J.G. Arnold. He was an Assistant for thirty years in Neurosurgery where he was trained to perform research on animals with tumors of the brain. Because of their research, doctors are able to perform delicate operations on individuals successfully. University of Maryland's Retired President and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Morton I. Rapoport, well known as an Infectious Disease Expert, remarked at Mr. Kelly's retirement that, "If it wasn't for Joe Kelly, I would not have made it through medical school". After retirement from University Hospital, he went to work for Investment Counselors of Maryland at 803 Cathedral Street. He worked there until he became sick and had to retire. This company thought highly of him and has continued to reach out to him even at his death. Joe Kelly was well loved and liked by so many people, that he was always the life of the party. Actually, the party didn't start until he arrived. He has so many friends that it was impossible to contact them all. If you knew him you knew you were going to have a good time no matter where you were. "Hey slim; Hold on to what you got until you get what you want; and, Are you on peanut butter, were some of his favorite sayings". Some of his buddies who preceeded him in death "Sidney, Elmer and Hosea will all meet again in the great beyond". Joseph B. Kelly leaves to mourn; a son, Harold J. Kelly; his daughter, Robin Johnson; one sister, Mary DorisParker; three grandchildren, Ikea deceased; Raven and Ian Anderson; godson Joseph T. Parker; and a host of nieces and nephews and his partner of eight years, Debbie Smith.
