Obituary

Joseph Kornegay was born in Grifton, North Carolina on March 1, 1921. On March 20,2014, God saw fit to call his faithful servant from labor to reward. Joe, son ofthe late Jesse and Clyde Kornegay, was one of twenty-four children. At a young age, he left school to work alongside his parents and other siblings in the tobacco fields. As a young man, he moved to Baltimore, Maryland, where he worked as a delivery man for a furniture company. A few years later in December 1942, he was drafted by the United States Army. In the Army, Joe earned the rank of Staff Sergeant and was decorated with the American Theater Service Medal; the EAME Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars; the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal; the Good Conduct Medal; and the World War II Victory Medal. In February 1946, he was honorably discharged. After his military career, he gained employment with the Social Security Administration where he worked for thirty- three years. Well known as a master carpenter and a jack- of-aU-trades, Joe took on projects for the Church, family and friends alike with a giving and loving spirit. Joe married Marie Merrick on March 29, 1963, and together they raised their family. Joe was a man of integrity with a servant heart. His word was his bond. He was faithful to his God, to his wife and their children. His love for the Lord led him to become a faithful member and an ordained Deacon at the Christian Community Church of God. During his 63 years of membership, he served as a President of the Senior Choir, a Vice-President of the Male Chorus, and a Men's Day Chairman. In his final moment when God called him home, Joe was blessed to be at home with his loving wife, Marie. She was holding his hand and praying for him as he took his last breath and entered the gates of heaven. He leaves to celebrate his life and memory his wife, Marie Kornegay; three daughters, Jackie Heyward, Beverly Johnson, and Goldie Kornegay; three sons, Allen, Sidney and Ralph Kornegay; two daughter-in-laws Kim and Vanessa Kornegay; nine grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.
