Obituary

Joyce Orlean Currie was born on September 6, 1938 in Street, Maryland. She
was the youngest of eight children born to the late Herbert and Marie
Gittings. She departed this life on February 23, 2019 surrounded by her
loved ones.

Joyce attended primary school at the historic Hosanna School in Darlington,
Maryland and later graduated from Central Consolidated Colored High
School in Hickory, Maryland. She was an active member of the school
chorus and a "Super Star" on the girls' basketball team. Joyce was an honor
student and served as president of her senior class. She later moved to
Baltimore, Maryland to attend Apex Beauty School.

In 1960, she met and married Favor Currie with whom she raised four
children. She worked as a licensed beautician and certified hair colorist at
131 on the Slade and Tres Hombres in Pikesville, Maryland for thirty years.
Joyce had an unmatched work ethic and at times held various small jobs
including laundry attendant and housekeeper. In 1979, she welcomed her
first grandchild. When Joyce learned there were two more grandchildren on
the way, she hung up her shears, retired as a hair colorist, and opened JC's
Daycare in 1992. She said, "no one is going to watch my grandbabies but
me." For the next twenty years, she provided a loving and caring environ-
ment for dozens of children in the Baltimore area.

Joyce accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and was baptized
at st. James U.A.M.E. Church. As an adult, she joined Concord Baptist
Church where she served on the Usher Board and was an active member for
over forty years until her health began to fail.

Joyce was always there for those who needed her. She will be remembered
as a dedicated mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Her home was often
filled with food, laughter, music and more as it served as the premiere
location for most extended family gatherings. Above all, Joyce was known
for her feisty demeanor and strong will. She was fiercely independent and
highly adept in using her words to keep those around her grounded. You
never had to guess where you stood with her.

She leaves to cherish her memory four children, Zachary Currie (Marie) and
Gregory Currie of Lochearn, MD, Lynn Currie of Elkridge, MD, and Stacey
Currie-Jones of Gwynn Oak, MD. Seven grandchildren, Shakeya Currie-
Foreman (Tyree), Keevon Jones, Dior Deleon, Charlee Jones, Garron Currie,
Tenesia Saunders, and Troy Saunders. Three great grandchildren, Cassidy
Foreman, Tavion Saunders, and Diaz Ellerby. Two goddaughters, Marcia
Simpson-Foster and Roxanne Marlow, and a host of nieces, nephews and
friends. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Thomas Gittings, Louis
Gittings, and Arthur Gittings, and four sisters, Dorothy Gittings, Beulah
(Mae) Smith, Shirley Dunsen, and Barbara Dyer.
