Obituary

Joyce Eva-Lyn Monroe, daughter of the late Theodore and Gladys Burrell, was born on January 14, 1942 in Baltimore, Maryland. She departed this life peacefully on May 23, 2012. She was baptized in 1994 at Pennsylvania Avenue African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, Baltimore, Maryland. She received her early education in the Baltimore City Public School System. She also attended Baltimore City Community College, where she received an Associate of Arts Degree in Early Childhood Education. While residing in Baltimore, she met and married Phillip Monroe. Although the marriage ended, from this union two children were born; Phillip Anthony Monroe and Kenneth Alonzo Monroe. She met her lifelong partner, Barbara Ann Williams in Baltimore, Maryland. Joyce was employed as a Teacher Assistant in School-Age Childcare, Sr. Leader and Acting Director for the Baltimore City Bureau of Parks and Recreation for twenty years, where she retired in 2006. Joyce came from a large family. Helping others was always her primary focus and it was evident in her career choices and family life. Everyone went to Joyce for advice. You could talk to her about anything and would always leave with encouraging words that made you feel better. Joyce was filed with great stories of the past, as she was the unofficial "family historian" remembering everyone's birthdays, death, marriage, etc. Throughout her life she enjoyed being surrounded by loved ones, where she spent many happy years creating cherished memories with her adoring family and friends. Joyce loved all types of activities such as ; card games she was the family Spade champion, puzzles, karate movies, music and board games she was also the family Scrabble champion. She was an avid sports and soap opera fan and a great entrepreneur who sold Everything! She leaves to cherish her memory; a loving partner, Barbara Ann Williams; one son Kenneth Monroe a son preceded her in death, Phillip Monroe; one sister, Shirley Burrell; three brothers, Theodore Melvin, George and Gordon; one aunt, Evelyn Tunstall of Philadelphia, PA; six siblings preceded her in death, Elizabeth Sivels, Doris Croswell, Eugene, Leroy, Leonard and Edward. Also surviving her cherish memory; four grandchildren, Tyleshia Monroe, Phillip Monroe, Jr., Kenneth Monroe, Jr., and Amia Monroe; and one great-grandchild, Samirah Brockington; nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
