Sunrise: Julia Bettie Mae Cooper, the daughter of the late James and Suzanne Sems, was born on November 8, 1915 in Darlington, SC and was raised in Cheraw, SC. She was the youngest child of 21 siblings. She obtained many names: Miss Bettie, Aunt Bettie and by neighbors, friends and family she was know affectionally as "Nana". Salvation: Evangelist Cooper began her Christian traning as an original member at the Christian Memorial Church in Baltimore, MD under the leadership of Reverend Lonnie Frank Brown. As her faith grew in the Lord she was ordained as an evangelist in the Baltimore area early 1970's. After being ordained as an evangelist she assisted many pastors in the starting of their own churches. Her home church was pastured by her nephew, Reverend M.J. Hunter. There she was the head of the missionary board, as the head of the Pastor's Aid Committee, the director of Sunday school, but her love and passion was to care for the Pastor. Family: "Nana" Mrs. Bettie, was united in Holy matrimony to the late William Cooper on March 27, 1946. Togehter they raised four children: William Cooper, Jr., Lonnia Cooper-Cooper-McCargo, Maggie Cooper-Mobley and Joan Cooper and a spiritual son, Robert Manning. She leaves behind a devoted son-in-law, Ronald McCargo, 14 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to raising her biological family she did not hesitate to open her home, doors or heart to children, strangers and others throughout the community. Work: "Nana" worked for a short time at the Domino Sugar plant, but most of her adult she worked as a domestic engineer in the Baltimore and DC area. After years of faithful service she entered into a well deserved retirement. As a aged gracefully and needed assistance she was preciously cared for by Pauline, Shon'te, Cherie and Marsha. Karen and Ryan quietly adopted Nana as their own grandmother and cared for her as such. Education: Nana graduated from Living World Bible College in 1987. Nana favorite scripture was: Greater is he that is in that is in me than he that is in the world."" I John 4:4 Sunset: She departed this life on June 12, 2008 at the wise and experienced age of 92 years old.
