KATHERINE DAVENPORT WIGGINS BEST departed this life on August 10, 2021, and is now present with the Lord. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Herlin Grant Davenport and the late Mary Kathyrn Taylor Davenport. Her siblings that preceded her in death were James M. Davenport, Alease Mary Davenport Addison, George Jerome Davenport Sr., Herlin Robert Davenport, Bernard K. Washington Davenport and Herlin Jones. Katherine was educated in the Baltimore City schools and was a graduate of the Historic Frederick Douglass High School, class of February 1948. She also attended Douglass Evening School, George Washington Carver Vocational Technical Evening School and Baltimore County Community College. She held lifetime memberships in both the Douglass High School and Carver High School Alumni Associations. Katherine was employed at the 2nd Army Headquarters at Fort Meade, at Social Security Administration and at Health Care Financing Administration (later became Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services). Since 1961 she was a member of the American Federation of Government Employees AFL-CIO Local 1923, and a retiree member since 2001. In 2001, she retired with over 41 years of public service. Katherine's parents took the family to church at Sharon Baptist Church where she and her brothers George and Robert became members at an early age. She served under Reverend Beal Elliott, Reverend James L. Moore, and Reverend Dr. Alfred C.D. Vaughn. In her youth, she sang in the Elliott Choir, and for many years, until her death, she was a member of the Maurice Henson Adult Sunday School and the Ethel S. Quarles Church Life Circle. She participated in all aspects of the church and its mission. Katherine loved reading, music, travel, and just having fun with family and friends. She studied music under her cousin Mamie Blackwell Rideout Williams and under Susie O. Dickerson. In later life, she participated in activities at Oliver and Sandtown Winchester Senior Centers. Katherine married Rudolph R. Wiggins, Sr., and from that union there was one son, Rudolph R. Wiggins, Jr., both of whom preceded her in death. She later married Charles R. Best, Jr. (who preceded her in death), and had a blended family: Charles Kevin (who also preceded her in death), and three girls, Adrien, Monica and Danielle Best. Katherine leaves behind to cherish her memory: a dear friend, Calvin Anderson, Sr;. grandson, Jordan R.R. Wiggins; daughter-in-law, Erica T. Wiggins; daughters, Monica T. Best-Shipley (Earl), Adrien Best and Danielle Best; brother-in-law, Angelo Best; goddaughters, Geraldine Bynum, Wanda McDuffie and Diane Alexander; godsons, David Teagle and Earl Cottman; nieces, Kathryn Waters (Stanley), Pamela Bollin (Everett), Arika Davenport and Janet Davenport; nephews, George Davenport, Jr. (Beverly) and Robert J. Davenport (Karen); a great-nephew who was always on call, Charles Ford, Sr. (Monica); special friends she considered her sisters and brothers, Mae Beale, Karen Blake, Geraldine Cotton, Katie Greene, Dr. Ruth Pratt, Therza Turnage, Anthony Parker, Minister Michael Jensen and Reverend Alfred C. D. Vaughn; and a host of other relatives and friends
