Obituary

KENNETH RUSSELL GARRETT was born January 20, 1943 to the late Edward and Mildred Garrett of Baltimore, Maryland. Russell was one of six siblings. Russell was a man of many questions. "Where your keys?" "Where your hat?" "Where your car?" "Where your pocketbook?" These are the questions often asked by Russell after he greeted you with a tap on the shoulder and a coy smile on his face. Russell was the product of a loving family, an outgoing community and a caring church.

Russell entered the Kingdom of Glory on November 17, 2017 after a brief illness. His siblings lovingly sat by his side as he drifted off into eternal rest. It was his strength and the faith of his love ones that allowed him to live 74 meaningful years. Even though he was a person with a disability, it never kept him from touching the hearts of the people he met. As a child, Russell received some early education, and learned many things from the community that valued him. In his youth in South Baltimore, you could find Russell delivering newspapers with his friend "Big Shot Bootsie." Russell learned to have a strong commitment to his community. When he relocated to the Popular Grove/Rosemont area in 1963, Russell ran errands for the neighbors, helped with the landscaping in the neighborhood and also kept his community clean.

Church also played a pivotal role in his life. Russell was a lifelong member of the historic Leadenhall Baptist Church. Russell joined the church on March 4, 1984. He was later baptized in June under the leadership of Dr. Eddie R. Wilson Jr. and that was a story because it took a lot of coaching to get him down in the baptismal pool. Russell was known as one of Reverend Wilson's main men along with his cousin Allan "Sonny" Hill. They were often appointed to collect the special offering for guest speakers, and they would stop you in your tracks if you tried to walk pass their basket. Russell was a member of the brotherhood ministry and the male Chorus. He was also an honorary choir member as he sat in rehearsals with his sister singing his favorite song "Call Him Up". It was also his Sunday morning ritual to have a fan and several programs before going to his seat.

Russell embodied a heart of gold filled with genuine intentions, laughter and love. He left a lasting impression on the lives he touched, and also made you aware of the simple things he loved. He was a lover of bread, cookies, sodas, neckties, new suits, Christmas, and his favorite day of all "My Birthday". Russell attended the Arc of Baltimore Center and A Better Day Adult Medical Day Care Services during the latter years of his life. He commonly referred to it as school. It was said that what others sought through education, Russell achieved with "mother-wit." He always found a way to understand and overcome the challenges life dealt him. If you met him, you certainly had a story to tell. As he got up in a
