Obituary

Lawrence Sylvester Hammond, a Baltimore native, was born on February 8, 1929 to the late Joseph Green and Helen Hammond. Affectionately known as "Larry," he attended the Baltimore City Public School System and began working at an early age. Larry had a remarkable talent playing the saxophone, his love for the instrument was shown through the beautiful soulful sounds he played. Always being an honorable and responsible man, Larry worked as a teenager to help support his mother and grandmother. In 1956, he married Evelyn Speaks and took on the responsibility of a ready made family and stayed committed to that union for thirty-six years until the unexpected death of his wife. Larry was loved, respected and will be dearly missed. Larry leaves to cherish his memory; his companion for twenty years, Lydia Gilmore; two daughters, Valerie Hammond and Joyce Hammond; a stepdaughter, Diana Evans he also had a stepdaughter that preceded him in death, Deborah Mosley; six grandchildren, Shannon Lane-Harris, Shasta Lee, Shanay Madison, Kevin Jones, Sharmel Evans and Latarsha Evans; fourteen great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; as well as William Gilmore and Kevin Lawson who were like his sons.
