Goldsborough-Hasty
October 21, 1931 – January 18, 2022
Dr. Leah Goldsborough Hasty retired Baltimore City Educator and Principal died
on Tuesday, January 18, 2022, at the age of 90.
Dr. Hasty was born in Easton, Maryland the 10
th
of 11 children. After a stellar
Talbot County education irrespective of the conditions at the time she, after writing the
alma mater for Robert Moton High school at age 16 entered Morgan State College. Here
she met Thomas L. Hasty, Jr., an Air Force Veteran also known as "1-2" for his boxing,
track, and football skills. Those skills eventually landed him in the Morgan State Athletic
Hall of Fame. They were married 53 years.
Upon graduation, Dr. Hasty entered the field of Education. After many years in
the classroom, she became an administrator in the Central Office and then Principal of
Matthew Henson Elementary School. While at Matthew Henson she garnered national
attention when she developed an all-boys first grade class led by a Black teacher. Scores
and attendance improved, and this became a national model for single sex classes.
She was deeply respected by those who knew her. They had a deep respect for her
passion for education and the love that she had for her students. Many of those students
have gone on to be educators and have remained in close contact with her over the years.
Dr. Hasty has been actively involved in a number of organizations and
community groups, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the Quettes, Morgan State Alumni,
Leah's Book Club (which she founded), The National Coalition of 100 Black Women,
the Red Hat Club and as a member of Epworth Chapel United Methodist several
ministries within the United Methodist Church.
Dr. Hasty was an avid reader and loved to watch and attend sporting events,
especially those involving her children and grandchildren. She is survived by, son,
Thomas L Hasty, III of Chesapeake, VA, (Shellie), four grandchildren: Tamice Spencer
of Richmond, VA, Grandson, Jarryd (J.T.) Hasty (Brittney) of Chesapeake, VA, Reginald
Hasty, of Chesapeake, VA and Markia Lewis of Pikesville, MD. A brother, Coleman A.
Goldsborough of Easton, MD, twosister-in-laws Nancy McIver and Beatrice Goldsborough, five great grandchildren
Jaivon, Braylan, Harlym, Story and Mycah. She has numerous nieces and nephews, three
God children, a host of other relatives and friends and is especially proud of her nieces
that followed her into Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She is preceded in death by her
husband Tom, daughter Nicole and great grandson Aidyn.
