Lela Sledge Davis
daughter of the late Herbert Clifton
Sledge, Sf. and Juanita Brantley Sledge, was born in Balti-
more, Maryland on March 28, 1943. She departed on Novem-
ber 14, 2017 at the age 74, after a lengthy illness. She was a
member of Sweet Hope Free Will Baptist Church in Baltimore,
where she was baptized as a young girl, and Morning Star
Baptist Church in Catonsville, Maryland.
Lela was educated in the Baltimore City Public Schools Sys-
tem, was a Business Administration honors graduate of both
Carver Vocational-Technical High School and Edmondson
High School, and attended Morgan State University, New
York University, Pace University, Brooklyn College and The
Fashion Institute of Technology of New York.
Highly intelligent, with expert grammar and editing skills, Lela
enjoyed diverse careers as a community organizer for the
Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), writer for the National
Urban League, and copy editor for the Wall Street firms of
Morgan Stanley and Dean Witter Reynolds. After retirement,
she served as secretary of the Resident Tenants Council of The
Allendale Apartments of Baltimore, and served on the Resi-
dent Advisory Board of the Baltimore City Housing Authority.
For many years, Lela lived and worked in Newark, New Jersey
and New York City. She enjoyed sewing, cuisine cooking,
jewelry-making, traveling, and earned a black belt in Tae
K wan Do Karate.
Lela was married to the late Richard Davis. She is survived by
her son, Wallace Curtis Logan, Sr.; daughter in-law, Jennette
Logan; two brothers, Herbert C. Sledge, Jr. and Reginald L.
Sledge; grand-daughter, Tiffani J. Holloway and husband Eric;
grand-son, Wallace Curtis Logan, Jr. and wife Toni; great
grand-sons, Machai, Liam, and Aaron Logan; niece, Chrystel
L. Bell; grand-niece, Tiffany L. Bell; and, aunts, cousins and a
host of other relatives and friends, including her "soul sisters"
Margaret Robertson, Edna Newkirk, Elaine Johnson; God
daughters, Darlene and Crystal; and, God-son Chad. Lela will
be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
