In her presence you felt the warmth of her light. On labor Day, September 7, 2009, a whole lifetime of experiences, joy, sorrow and almost 91 years of life went form labor to reward when Lena, a petite, feisty and loving spirit, left all those who loved and cherished her on earth. Lena was one of eight children born to Jessie and Bertha Whitaker in Enfield, North Carolina. She loved the Lord and accepted Christ at an early age. For many years she was a member of Greater New Hope Church in Baltimore. for the last 5 years Aunt Lena resided with her nephew, Melvin Bartee, where she added great joy and love to all the lives of Melvin, his wife, Reginia and their children, Jasmine and Johnny. In their home she was extremely content in being lovingly cared for and throughtly indulged. Her sisters, marjorie and Ellen, her niece, Shirley, and her faithful friends, Margarent, children and Weezie frequently visited and provided inmeasurable support. Lena loved being dressed upi, wearing her favorite bracelets and earrings. She loved to eat, especially cheesesteaks, crabcakes and barbeque."Get me that piece of bread" was frequently uttered by Lena. Aside from eating, her faovrtie pastimes including watching baseball games, singing gospel music, humming and having scripture read to her.Her sister Margaret reflects, "Lena loved people and loved to sit down and run her mouth. She would go out of her way to do anything for anybody". Reginia, her niece, reflects, ""i never knew my grandmothers. Aunt lena filled a deep void in my life. God gave her to me and me to her. It was a great joy having her in the lives of my family. i wish i could have at least 5 more years with her. Lena died in the arms of her devoted and beloved great-niece, Jasmine. Lena was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Clark. Left to cherish precious memories are: four daughters, Linda Hunter, Barbara Bellamy, Donnie Robinson and Pytorcha Brooks; three sons, Rudolph, Don and Marshall Clark; two sisters, Marjorie Washington and Ellen Smith; special nephew, Melvin Bartee, and his family; countless grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends too numerous to count.
