Leroy Roy McDowell, the ninth of thirteen children, was born on August 7, 1927 to the late John Moss McDowell and Edna McGuill McDowell of Lynchburg, South Carolina. He departed this life on Friday, August 17, 2012. Leroy, fondly known as "Roy," was born into a loving christian family and received his education in the Lee County Public School System. When he became a young man he too decided to leave South Carolina and join his brother in Baltimore, Maryland. When Leroy first came to Baltimore, he had to get adjusted to the people and their lifestyles in the city. He worked several jobs here and there before he became a permanent employee. Roy was blessed with employment at the "World Famous" Lexington Market as a Lead Porter. He was well liked by everyone he worked with and met. Roy retired after thirty years of distinguished service. Roy was quite a jokester and loved to have fun. He also loved to travel. When he was still able to operate a vehicle, he would drive back to his hometown to visit his mother and family many times bringing along with him a car load of family. After retirement, Atlantic City was like his second home. Preceding Roy in death are ; his parents, John and Edna McDowell; brothers, Louis, Henry, Walter, Thomas, John, Willie, Herbert and James McDowell; and loving sister, Dorothy Durant, who cared for him when his health started to fail. He leaves to cherish his memory; two daughters, Shirley Steadmen of Timmonsville, South Carolina and Sandra Murchison of Baltimore, Maryland; two sisters, Ethel Mae Sharper of Lynchburg, South Carolina and Isabelle Rev. Alonso Gamble of Fort Pierce, Florida; loving grandchildren, nieces, nephews, a host of other loving relatives and friends.
