Obituary

LESLIE H. SAUNDERS, SR., the youngest son of the late Tennyson
O. Saunders and Edna Crosby Saunders, was born on March 29, 1921 in
Baltimore, Maryland. He departed this life, suddenly, on February 3, 2010.

Leslie was a graduate of Carver Vocational Technical High School. After
graduation, he started working as a mechanic. He was eventually drafted
into the military and honorably served his country from 1943 to 1945 as a
member of the United States Army. Leslie was stationed overseas in North
Africa and in Italy. While in Italy, he demonstrated a gift for languages because
he was able to quickly learn Italian. After the military, Leslie started working
for Shirks Motor Express Company as a tractor trailer driver. It was there
that he became a member of the Teamsters Union. Leslie eventually went
on to work as a truck driver for the Yellow Transportation Freight Express
Company. He did this for thirty years and retired from this company.

Leslie married the former Berdella Rhodes, who was nicknamed
"Bunchie." Her nickname for him was "Moesy." Out of this union, seven
children were born; Leslie H. Saunders [r., LeRoy C. Saunders, Edna R.
Saunders, Leonard C. Saunders, Levi T. Saunders, Leon O. Saunders, and
Carolyn Saunders Johnson.

"Moe," as he was known to his friends in South Baltimore, loved a
good time. In his youth, he was known to play a mean game of baseball
and also to be able to swim from the downtown harbor all the way to the
Hanover Street Bridge. He was opposed to people who took advantage of
others for selfish reasons. Moe was known to be somewhat of a rogue, but
he was also known to be a major helper of individuals who were dealing
with stressful financial situations. In fact, he was known throughout South
Baltimore for his excellent financial management skills. Although he had his
street friends, later in life he became a homebody, much to the liking of his
beloved wife Bunchie who predeceased him by only three months. The two
were married for sixty-three years. When Moesy died, he died with a smile
on his face. His children believed that God may have called him home, but
it was Bunchie who came to him to get him.

Leslie's passing is mourned by: his two daughters, Edna R. Saunders and
Carolyn Johnson; his two sons, Leslie H. Saunders, Jr. and Leon O. Saunders;
sister, Goldie Saunders Thompson; three sisters-in-law, Viola Rhodes Brooks,
Bertie Rhodes Gibson and Doris Saunders; son-in-law, Chaazaq Ratazawn
Johnson; several grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives
and friends.

His brothers James T. Saunders and Alfred Saunders predeceased him.
