Lillie Mae Peoples was born on March 25, 1923, in the city of Suffolk, Virginia in a community named Jericho to Annie Mae Peoples and Johnny Peebles. She accepted Christ at the age of 13 while attending First Baptist Church in Suffolk. Events of her childhood helped her to become the strong, independent, skilled and resourceful woman she grew to be. While visiting family and friends in Baltimore, she was introduced to a young man. Edward Lee Lockett, who won her heart. They courted for 4 years and married on September 8, 1942. The honeymoon was short-lived. Two weeks later he was called up by Uncle Sam. A budding entrepreneur, she wanted to start her own business. She looked in the Afro-American newspaper for a place that would accommodate both a home for her growing family and her business pursuit. By chance, she came across a house located on Payson Street that contained family living quarters, as well as, a storefront. This was the beginning of a successful business that lasted 17 years. Growing a business and caring for her growing family at the same time was made to seem like an easy task for Lillie Mae. She was pressing clothes, waiting on customers, making clothing alterations, making clothes for her children, changing diapers and running a home nearly single handedly. Her aunt introduced her to a small Baptist Church located at 1212 Yz Saratoga Street with Reverend Luke G. Reynolds as pastor. Lillie Mae joined the church in 1954. Once all the children were able to be at church, her new freedom allowed her to become an usher where she eventually assumed a leadership role. Lillie Mae has faithfully served Gospel Tabernacle over the years by becoming an active member of the Pastor's Aid and Sisterhood ministries for over 19 years. She has taught Sunday School and served in the Soup Kitchen, Willing Workers and Flower Circle Ministries. Lillie Mae's 49-year marriage to Edward ended on November 17,1991, when the Lord called him home. On June 25, 1994, she married John Archie Parker. He also predeceased her. Her memory is cherished by many. She leaves 7 of her 8 children Evelyn L. Lockett Green, Lucille Lockett Ellis, Edward Lee Lockett, Jr., Donald Gene Lockett (Erma), James Earl Lockett, Sr. (Iris), Theodore Lee Lockett..and Delveeta Ann Scarborough. Her daughter, Dollye Mae Stewart went home to be with the Lord on January 18, 2007. She also leaves her stepson, Ronald Parker (3 sons), her sister, Ellen Marie Brown (Fred), her sister-in-law, Lillian Pierce, and her childhood friend, Frances Powell to mourn her passing. All of her brothers predeceased her- Albert Pierce, Preston Peoples, and Willie Peoples-Haskett. The proliferation of her family through her 8 children, 21 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren, and 19 great, great grandchildren have produced quite a legacy. She will be missed by a host of nieces, nephews and numerous other family and friends, as well as, her Gospel Tabernacle Baptist Church Family. At 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 29,2015, she departed this life to receive her God given reward at the age of 91 years. Her favorite scripture is: Psalm 27:1 "The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life, of whom shall I be afraid?" Viewing Joseph H.
