Lilyan REGINA FLACKS SLATER, the first of four daughters of the late Floyd and Maggie Hacks, was born April 20, 1916 and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. She was a faithful member of Christian Love Baptist Church under the pastoring of Reverend Dr. William C. Bailey. Lilyan married Edward 1. Slater in 1945 and established their home in Northwest Baltimore on Monroe Street. During their marriage they enjoyed socializing with family and friends, travel and support their community and city in various activities with youth and caring for people of all ages and their churches. Lilyan graduated from Frederick Douglass High School, class of 1933 and continued her education at Provident Hospital School of Nursing graduating in 1939. During her career, Lilyan spent many years at the Druid Health and Eastern Health Districts before her retirement as a School Health Nurse at Lake Clifton High School While at the Health department, Lilyan worked in the Venereal Disease clinics, Maternal and Child Health Programs and Community Mental Health and Hygiene Program under the direction of Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Lilyan was among the first African American nurses to train at Johns Hopkins in X-Ray Technique. Lilyan pursued additional studies in nursing at University of Maryland and Morgan State College (now Morgan State University) and taught adult education classes in Home Nursing for Baltimore City Public Schools. Lilyan worked as a Private Duty Nurse at Provident Hospital and in patients' homes and accompanying patients on trips. She was also a staff nurse at Freedom Hospital in Washington, DC for four and a half years. Lilyan was a charter member, 1946, of Gamma Chapter of Chi Eta Phi Sorority Inc., a national nursing sorority of registered nurses, Big Sisters of Baltimore and other social and civic organizations. Lilyan has received several citations from organizations, Christian Love Baptist Church, City of Baltimore, State of Maryland and President Barack Obama. She served as a Board Member with Elder Health Agency in reference to services for seniors, she was the first Black Nurse to establish and fund a scholarship in the name of Lilyan F. Slater Scholarship in conjunction with Gamma Chapter of Chi Eta Phi Sorority. Arthritis prevented her body from doing the things she loved but her mind allowed her to reflect and to share how things used to be. She has left a tremendous history and touched so many lives. Early November 5th, she entered a new home and said good bye to her St. Elizabeth Nursing Home family.
