Obituary

Lorraine Johnson, the eldest daughter of the late Henry Thomas Johnson and

Maude Pinkney, was born April 15, 1944 in Baltimore, Maryland. "Raine" or

"Grandma," as she was affectionately known by family and friends, was raised in

West Baltimore with her siblings, Augustine, Emma, Annette, Loretta, Roland,

Henry, Jerome ("Buster"), Leroy, Donald, and Leon ("Mikey") in a loving family.

From her parents, Raine learned the value of hard work and taking care offamily.

Raine was the family babysitter - caring for many of her nieces, nephews and

neighborhood kids.

As a single parent, Raine raised her daughter and three sons in the Cherry Hill

Homes Housing Project. She enjoyed sports and was active playing for the Cherry

Hill Cougars softball and bowling teams. She was also active with her sons with

Optimist Football, Cub Scouts, track and swimming. As an active and vocal

resident in Cherry Hill, she served on the Resident Advisory Board from 1970-

1974. During this time, she received acknowledgement for her leadership, which

included receiving the Harry B. Weiss Award from the late Mayor and Governor,

William Donald Schaffer in 1976 and 1977.

In 1979, Raine began working with the Housing Authority of Baltimore City at

Clairmont Homes as a Senior Aide. She was later promoted to Manager of the

Senior Assistant Living Program at Bel-Park Tower and Bernard E. Mason Senior

buildings until she retired in 2008. During her years of service, she received

numerous awards. After her retirement, she often went back to Bel-Park Tower

and assisted her friends with monthly banking and shopping.

In retirement, Raine did what she loved best - caring for her grandchildren and

later, her great-grandchildren. She stressed to them the importance of education

and how to protect themselves in a fight. She had many passions - sports,

reading, karate, studvlng various religions, photography and collecting basketball

trading cards. She will be most remembered for encouraging everyone to love

and help each other, watching westerns and threatening to "hurt anyone with
