Lottie Mae Robinson, daughter of the late William "Bill" and Mary "Maggie" Martin, was born 94 years ago. On June 21, 2014 at 8:28p.m.,she quietly closed her eyes and departed this life, surrounded by loves ones at her home. Mrs. Lottie Mae Robinson was the quint-essential of a share cropper's daughter. That is to say that she was a perfect example of the strength ofa woman; her endurance, determination, her convictions and her spirit. She made a way out of no way. Ms. Lottie was born on September 1 ih, 1919 in Star, South Carolina; a place so small she said it only had one traffic light and a post office. At a very young age her family moved to Aiken, South Carolina where she was raised. Her father pulled her out of school at just 7 years old to work in the family sharecropping business; the cotton fields. She says she worked from sun up to sun down until she turned 14 at which time she started her domestic career; working in the homes of the bosses. And clearly Ms. Lottie was superior at domestic engineering because she raised 8 children and brought a house all from contracting out her services to clean people's houses. She never took public assistance; she said we didn't need it. In the spring of 1939, at just 19 years old Ms. Lottie left the South. She says that she went to the bus station and waited for whichever bus came first: Baltimore or Boston. She arrived in Baltimore early in the morning and she says by 9 am she had secured a job and a place to stay; and she never looked back. Many followed her here and laid down theirroots because of Ms. Lottie. Baltimore, Maryland was her home for over 75 years. She was also a freedom fighter as she walked in the March on Washington with Martin Luther King, Jr and even went to. President John F. Kennedy's funeral. Lottie demonstrated her love for the Lord all of her life; she was a devout member of Provident Baptist Church, until she found her love for Islam in the Moorish Science Temple of America where she was a humble and cherished elder of the Temple. Lottie met and married the late Odell Robinson, Sr., and she raised their 8 children. Odell preceded her in death in 1987. She also mourned the death of her eldest son Odell Robinson-El Jr, in 1988. OUf beloved mother leaves to mourn with very heavy hearts her children; 6 daughters: Wilhelmina Braswell, Mary Robinson, Ella Edmond, Dorothy Clark, Clara Robinson-El and Claressa Bey and one son: Robert Robinson, twenty grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren and even a few great, great grand's, 2 sons-in-Iaws and one daughter-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives; all too numerous to name for she was truly loved and respected. Ms. Lottie, just one of the many affectionate names that folks have called her, survived all of her siblings. She will never be forgotten; she can't for she has instilled so many of her ways and beliefs in her children and grandchildren that we are all a part of her, and as long as WE stay together and strong like she would want us to do ... she will live forever; in the flesh, through us.
