Lula Mathis-Garrett



1922-2020



Lula Garrett, daughter of the late Simps and Agnes Mathis, was born in Edgefield South Carolina on February 9th, 1922. She departed from this life on Tuesday November 24th at 10:44pm.



She was one of 10 siblings, 8 who preceded her in death: Julia, Ann, Marie, Estelle, Helen, Josephine, Emily, John, and Joseph. Lula was joined in holy matrimony on October 9th, 1939 to the late Leon Garrett. From this union was born two children, Ophelia Taylor, and the late Leon Garrett Jr. Lula and Leon moved to Washington, D.C in 1941 and joined the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church where they attended until moving to Baltimore, MD in the early 1950's. She joined The New Antioch Baptist Church in the early 2000's and was a member for many years. Lula worked for Hutzler's department as a domestic worker. While employed at Hutzler's, she obtained her cosmetology license and she remained employed there until she retired.



Lula was a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great great grandmother who possessed many talents like pottery, floral design, and was an incredible cook.



Left to cherish her memory are daughter: Ophelia Taylor and grandson Jamauni Taylor, one sister Helen Gilliam, 5 grandchildren: Eric Garrett (Angela), Dominick Garrett (Lisa), Trina Hall, Keshia Green, Troy Garrett (Cassandra), 14 great grandchildren, and 9 great great grandchildren. Great grandchildren: Arielle Garrett, Alexis Garrett, Eric Garrett II, Dominick Garrett Jr, Terrell Garrett, Ambria Hollingsworth-Garrett, Day-Zha'h Garrett, Shalonda Fleming (Tyrell), Howard Hall (Tia), Travon Hall, Brittany Green, Troy Garrett Jr, Nicole Garrett, Noel Garrett. Great great grandchildren: Isaac Davis, Auriyah Hollingsworth, Sharelle Fleming, Tyrell Fleming Jr, Amari Hall, Aiden Hall, Avaya Hall, Paige Hall, Madisyn Garrett During the course of her life, she had a dear friend and next-door neighbor, Minnie Johnson who will miss her very much.
