Obituary

Quietly, she slept away on Monday morning November 26, 2007. The angels of God rejoiced at her entry into heaven. Mabel S. Craig, known to many as ''Nana'' or ''Mother Craig'' was born on March 6, 1916 in Sumter, South Carolina to Deacon Henry and Lula Spann. She accepted Christ as her personal Savior at Jehovah Baptist Church at an early age. Mother Craig was educated in the Sumter Public School System. After schooling, she met and married Ernest Williams. From that union came Ernest, Jr., Lula Mae and Lester. She and Ernest later moved to New York City and raised their children. After the death of Ernest, she met and married David Worrell. Many happy years were spent together, until his untimely death in 1965. Nana dedicated many years in the Friendship Baptist Church in New York City and held various positions in that church. It was at Friendship where she met and married Deacon James Craig in 1977. After retiring from the Amtrak Corporation in 1979 after 34 years of service, she continued to work in the church. In 1990, Deacon and Mabel Craig moved to Baltimore, Maryland and became affiliated with The Mount Moriah Baptist Church, where she immediately became an active member. All who knew Mrs. Craig knew of her love, devotion and praise to Almighty God, her Savior. She never had a fear of speaking about how the Lord was her salvation and protection. Her favorite hymn was ''Oh, How I Love Jesus''. Nana will be missed by her earthly family, but will be remembered by her cooking, coconut pies, perfume and certainly her hundreds of hats. Meeting Mother Craig was an impressionable memory. Once you met her, she endeared herself to you and always had an encouraging word or scripture verse. Love ones preceding Nana in death are her mother, Lula Spann, sister, Anna Thomas and past husbands. She leaves to mourn her cherished memory, three children, Henry, Jr. Marilyn of Atlanta, Georgia; Lula Mae Bill of Baltimore, Maryland and Lester Alice of Brooklyn, New York; grandchildren, nephews, nieces and a host of relatives and friends.
