Margaret Ellen Collins-Brown, the eldest of two children of the late Earl Devon and Cecelia Collins and stepdaughter of the late Betty Pettis Collins, was born on February 26. 1921 in Mount Winans, Maryland. She departed this life on October 14, 2011 at Saint Agnes Hospital following a sudden illness. Her brother, Earl Devon Collins, Jr. preceded her in death. She was married to the late Thomas Leroy Brown for forty-three years and together they had one adopted son, Douglas Vernon Brown who preceded them in death. Margaret's life is a living testimony of what one can accomplish through committment and dedication. She loved school and excelled in many areas of education. She attended the Baltimore City Public School System. Following her graduation from Frederick Douglas Senior High School, she attended the Vocational Technical Evening school receiving a deploma in Business Education. She received a Distinguished Scholarship Award from Coppin State University and a Bachelor of Science Degree on June 10, 1965. Margaret was also the receipient of the alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society excelling in all her classes graduating at the top of her class. For eighteen years Margaret taught Elementary School and received numerous awards upon her retirement. Margaret was strong in her faith walk with Jesus Christ. She became a member of John Westley United Methodist Church in 1953 under the leadership of Rev. Frank J. Frye who was the pastor at that time. When the church relocated to North Avenue, Margaret continued fer fellowshop with them. She supported the church in all its endeavors and served on the Finance Committee for more than fifty years, Women's Society of Christian Service prior to its becoming the United Methodist Woman Steward Club, Schlarship Committee, Food Pantry, Clothing Closet, various choirs of the church. What can we say about Margaret, she was simply a doer of the word of God. She leaves with cherished memories; a devoted aunt, Olivia Jones; two granddaughters, Janell Brown Matthews and Candis Brown; sisters-in-law, Lucy Collins, Iris Palestine Davis James and Sarah Barney; brother-in-law, Warren Barney Christine;loving niece, Ida Marsell; lifetime devoted friends, Evelyn Thompson and Ida Johnson; five great-grandchildren, Rodney, Kevin, Jayla, London and Langston; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
